"Gerry Gow isn’t like City’s other former players.
He isn’t an ambassador for the club or employed as a television pundit.
He doesn’t write a column in the programme or make appearances at supporters clubs.
Instead Gow, who made more than 500 league appearances and played in the 1981 FA Cup final against Tottenham, stacks shelves at his local Tesco in Dorset to make ends meet." (Manchester Evening News, May 21st 2012)
Lots of players get called 'Legends', then there's Gerry Gow! In his day, he was here, there and every ... (well, you know the rest!). On Saturday, he'll be at Ashton Gate for a long overdue testimonial. Hopefully you will too.
In this era of footballers earning tens of thousands of pounds a week and having no need for a 'retirement fund' from a testimonial, this is one occasion when such a game could not be more deserved.
Gerry (for those too young to have seen him play: a tough-tackling Glaswegian midfielder) made 445 appearances for City between 1969 and 1981 before being transferred to Manchester City, in an attempt to balance the books. As a result, despite his lengthy service, he was never given a testimonial. Until now.
Few players merit your support more than Gerry Gow. Please try to get to his game, Saturday at 3pm. Tickets are just £8 (£4 for concessions). You can pay on the day, over the phone on 0117 963 0600, online or at the City shop.
Even if you can't get to the game, why not show your support for Gerry by buying a ticket anyway, here online?
See you on Saturday!
