you only have to look at my avatar-is that the right word ,to know he is my favourite city player ever, could use him in that midfield now.
My personal favourite will always be 'Big John Atyeo' but I'm older generation, I loved Gerry Gow , certainly right up there with the best of his generation.
i think we are much the same age wize, i am of the class 0f 1953 so only saw big john twice maybe three times, would love to have seen him when i could more appreciate what he was all about when at his best,
Too young to remember Atyeo, my favourite was Gerry Gow, I also loved Ritchie. Who I think was very underrated, Cheesley is the best header of a ball I’ve ever seen, but sadly career cut short, so difficult to judge alongside Gow and Ritchie who maintained the level for years. Closely followed by Merrick and bite your legs, Norm. In the years since Super Bob and Murray. Of our league 1 winning team it has to be Wilbrahamawich. Partially because I criticised his signing and roundly had to eat humble pie. Often he seemed to almost single handedly drag us over the winning line, almost Gowest at times.
Paul Cheesley would have gone on to play for England at the time no one came close-Tom Ritchie-Jimmy Mann-Clive Whitehead-Gary Collier-Trevor Tainton- Kevin Mabbut were fantastic. Norman Hunter was class however his best days were behind him at Leeds -but gave his all to city.
Best C F...... Cheese Best Midfielder.....Gowie Best Defender........ Hunter....by far. All the above were international standard. Today's lot are miles away.
another under rated player was Chris Crowe used to take the corners if they had assists back then! he would have been top of the pile! Made a few for for JG............
I don’t remember much about JG, I was very young, too young to appreciate how good or otherwise he was, all I remember is he always seemed to score.
actually just looked it up thought he scored more but was very very close to 1 goal every 2 games! he had a couple or more hatricks on debut was first one
i used to drink with a fellow in croydon who used to play for crystal palace back in the day,in his words atyeo was nigh on impossible to knock of the ball short of using a brick,
