Liverpool's Steven Gerrard had doubts he would return from injury iverpool captain Steven Gerrard has admitted to being concerned whether he would return from injury during the "hardest six months of my career". Gerrard, 31, scored against Manchester United on Saturday in his first start since groin surgery in March. Asked if he feared for his career, Gerrard said: "I think it's only natural you have doubts and different things do cross your mind. "There were times when I was as low as I've ever been as a footballer." Gerrard said that before the operation he needed injections to get through games. "Basically, I knew that wasn't right," he added. "I was missing training sessions and coming in the day before a game trying to get that last session in or having injections to play the next day. "You can only do that for a certain amount of time before your body gives in - and mine gave in. "My groin packed in on me and, when it happened, I was down and I was low. "I knew it was going to be a serious one, something I wasn't used to. I had to try to be positive but I will admit that I was down." Gerrard had expected to return for the start of the season but caught an infection related to the groin injury in July. He was admitted to hospital for further treatment. "When it [the injury] happened, it took time before I got back into a positive frame of mind," Gerrard said. "Without doubt the last six months have been the hardest of my career."
Show how impaired he was before the op, hopefully it explains his poorish form then, and now he's sorted he can get back to were he was.
I read that yesterday and thought that I wasn't surprised. For the last 2 seasons he was avaoiding tackles as much as possible and restricting his ramapaging runs. I really hope that he is now fully fit and merely requires to gain full match fitness. A Gerrard that we all know would be such a great addition to the squad.
Well we'll see over the course of the next 6 months as stamina can't be built up. the question must be asked... gerrard, torres and others... Benitez may have been calleda tinkerer but he never dropped those two and really the injuries they sustained have to be laid at his door. Pressure is one thing but in reality by over playing them he probably ended up costing himself. the other question has to be what other injuries were a problem here, was it all the groin issue or what? cos if one things resolved and another is not then we've got to be worried there. Finally I think we must see gerrard as a guy who should not start every game and he's got to get that into his head. I won't begrudge him a euro 2012 slot of he's picked but he should retire from internationals then. If gerrard goes back to 2 gamaes a week i think its a big load on him at this point. for that reason if he takes up the 70mins per game type of role and we put in say henderosn or someone as sub he could extend his career.
I thought myself that we might not see him back, especially as in the close season there was so much talk of his return then it kept getting put back. Let's hope he's fully recovered and he has an injury free finale to his career.
