I don't post on this very often and I am an Arsenal fan but I was wondering if the (more older) Liverpool fans rated Gerrard as 'pools greatest ever player. To me he's fantastic and had been a beast for you guys but I'm an outsider looking in and also on 27 so can't compare him to other greats like Dalgleish, Keegan etc. What's your thoughts?
I think it's hard to really compare players of different generations. Not only did they not play against each other but technologies/tactics and refereeing changes too. Gerrard was the best player of his generation to play for Liverpool.
Gerrard is a Legend. Is he our greatest ever player? Only time will ultimately say. For me the list of out greatest ever would include: Elisha Scott, Jack Balmer, Albert Stubbins, Billy Liddell and Kenny Dalglish. I would not include either Keegan or Owen in that list - the way you leave the club is just as important as how you play!
I think in terms of individual contribution and influence he's by far Liverpool's greatest player ever.
NO Garlic, the question was about the GREATEST player. Now I can't chose from the list that I forwarded (I didn't see the first 3!) but I read the history and there was something about them that put them above truly GREAT players such as Fowler, Rush, Barnes or even Suarez.
I am always amazed when i see threads like this on your board that Hughes never gets a mention. Did he do something to upset you all that i never heard about?
Crazy Horse was a great player in my estimation but somehow he too misses out on the accolade of GREATEST. As far as I am concerned he did nothing to sully his Legend reputation.
You may disagree with me here Dave, but i always think of players in certain catagories. Hughes, gerrard, Keane and Robson i look at as the driving force of the teams they played in, the never give up players. For me, that makes them great players for the club/team. GREATEST? hard to say what constitutes this, it is not something i would like to have to decide
The greatest must include the trophies that the player brought the club as well as his talent. It has to be Kenny Dalglish. He was the top striker in the league for many seasons and he won many trophies. He was also an example to all.
I agree with you as I'm glad that I don't have to make the decision. There is something in the character of those players who make it onto the Greatest list that distinguishes them from the great players that have served the club - what that something is I'm not sure.
Billy Liddell proved himself not only a great player but also a perfect representative/ambassador for the club. He was that important to the club that we were often referred to as Liddellpool! However, he played at a time when we found trophies very hard to come by but that makes him no less than Dalglish.
Rep Best player of my generation no doubt. Not old enough to fully appreciate the players when we were at our peak. Thing is, he's not been bleed with a constant stream of players close enough to his ability to get the trophies he's deserved. You look at others like Rush and Kenny who got to play with each other and with top midfielder behind them etc making them look even better. Gerrard has had top players for mall periods of time but not a prolonged period and the years when he was in his prime (2005/2006) we were only top quality for a couple of years.
So what makes Dalglish more worthy of that title than any of the other players that I suggested earlier?
