http://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/latest-news/gerrard-i-m-humbled-and-flattered Steven Gerrard spoke of being 'flattered and humbled' after the country's football writers honoured him for his outstanding contribution to the English game. The Football Writers' Association staged a gala dinner at the Savoy in London, inviting 400 guests to see Gerrard presented with the Tribute Award. The presentation was made by FWA chairman Andy Dunn of the Sunday Mirror. Gerrard said: "Tonight's award means a lot because these guys have followed me throughout my career, written about me whenever I have played. To receive this award from the Football Writers' Association is a very proud night for myself and my family. -------------------------------------------------------------- Jamie Carragher is in no doubt that Steven Gerrard is the greatest Liverpool player ever. The defender has watched from close quarters during the last 16 years as a succession of stars etched their name into the club's record books. Carragher is not short of Reds landmarks himself - the second-highest appearance maker with 721 games, for example. But the 34-year-old regards his long-time teammate as simply the best. "I think we are in the presence of the greatest player ever to play for Liverpool," Carragher said of Gerrard. "People will say I am biased because we are good friends and because of the trophies we have won together, but it is a fair accolade to give him. "There are guys like Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Ian Rush, all world-class players, but the difference was they were in a world-class team - and Stevie has not played in a world-class team. "Stevie's one strength is he has no weakness, he can run, tackle, pass and score goals. "Football is a team game, but special players do special things at special times, and that is Steven Gerrard." ------------------------------------------------- Carra is going to be biased but I agree, to me he's the best. Never has someone lifted a whole team so often and won important matches almost single handed.
I've watched the very best over the years with Liverpool. In terms of his contribution throughout his career, I think he does have to rank as the best overall. It's a travesty he doesn't have a PL winners medal to give him the full set. Truly great player.
I'd prob agree but wouldnt decide between dalglish and gerrard for our best ever player. thats a hard one. Certainly he's our best ever midfielder. For me any accolade he gets he deserves (but it doens't prevent me from expressing an opinion on him playing every game or fitness levels etc) I presuem the rpess ran out of manc players to honour eventually eh
As much as I hate, the wrinkly foreheaded, DJ bashing, cuckhold, belter, he's one of the best midfield players I've ever seen & he'd certainly be in my all time PL XI. I can't think of another player who literally carried a fairly ordinary side over such a sustained period, week after week after ****ing week At his peak there's not many who can stand up to scrutiny in comparison imo. (just off to bath in bleach as I feet dirty after writing that)
Yes, I can imagine that caused you some pain, but thanks for your heavily biased input. Make it all the more sweet
I'm finished with polls, some were starting to find it annoying which was exactly what I was trying to do. I'm still deciding on what annoying thing I'll do next. Haven't done a Corrie Update for a while.
