According to Steven Gerrard on the BBC football website, Luis Suarez is the best striker Steven Gerrard says he's ever played with, including Owen and Torres. Any views on this?

  2. I saw this earlier in the week. I don't know whether to believe him or not on this, he can't really say Torres or Owen were better can he?

I think Suarez is definitely the most skillful player he's played alongside but to use the word 'striker'? I'd say that was Fowler <ok>

He had the best relationship with Fernando - the two were devastating.

Torres is the better striker/finisher whereas Suarez is a better all round player in terms of goals, assists and desire.

He's very different to the two players mentioned and I find it hard to compare him to them, but at the end of the day Suarez is playing as a striker so it's a fair comparison.

Owen was a better finisher Torres was quicker and more direct. You could say Suarez has a bit of everything and that is what makes him stand out.

Did he actually play alongside Fowler? My footie reporter mate is also a rabid manc and he reckons Fowler is the most naturally gifted striker he's ever seen play. I tend to agree with him.

He obviously never saw Frankie Bunn play.

  7. Fowler left for Leeds in 2001 and Gerrard made is debut in 1998 so they had three years together (plus the second stint) but it is probably fair to say that it wasn't the time of Robbie being a god <ok>

  8. Fowler's record in those years:

    1997-98: 13 goals in 28 games
    1998-99: 18 in 35
    1999-00: 3 in 14
    2000-01: 17 in 48
    2001-02: 4 in 17 (he left mid-season)

    2005-06: 5 in 16
    2006-07: 7 in 23

He sounds like a comic-book character.

I think the key words are "play WITH", Torres never really was imbedded in the team creating chances etc, he just poached like a mad man and was bloody good at it, superb finisher. Suarez must be a joy to play with as he is more like an attacking midfielder who can score

  14. I'd say Torres linked up with his teammates more than Suarez does. Torres needed his teammates whereas Suarez tries to do things on his own <ok>

Suarez is the best all round most skillful.

Image Torres, Suarez and Gerrard in the same team...

Or Torres of 2008 any way.

But Torres had the likes of Gerrard (at his peak), Alonso, Kuyt, Yossi playing with him. However, I disagree that he needed others. He was also capable of scoring goals out of nothing.

Suarez doesn't have that quality around him, which is probably why he feels the need to do everything himself.

  17. Gerrard was asked to name his best Liverpool XI (including himself) for whilst he's been at the club {link}.

He put Torres, Fowler and Suarez up front. However, I don't think it would work. Suarez would be capable of moving to a wider position but the other two both want to be in the middle, Torres is rubbish as part of a front pairing. Who would be sacrificed? I can't see Fowler player as a outside forward so I say it would have to be Torres.

If my memory serves me right, this was this team:

    Reina
    Babbel - Carragher - Hyypia - Johnson
    Hamann
    Gerrard - McAllister
    Torres - Fowler - Suarez

Would loved to have seen your trio though <ok>

  18. He was capable of scoring goals by him self but he was more reliant on others than Suarez is.

    Definitely <ok>

I remember Torres's goal against Inter at the San Siro - the ball came to him as he was facing away from the goal, defender tight to him, and somehow managed to swivel and shot into the bottom corner. A goal out of nothing, which won us the game. How we could do with some of those right now!!
