I never realised that Steven Gerrard was so low on confidence, that he needs Ferguson's seal of approval even at the age of 33, about his undoubted ability.

Maybe his low self-esteem is the reason why he never left the provinces and moved to a big club to play alongside the best, and the reason why he choked big games for England too. maybe the threats from gangsters to stay in a fish bowl were just an excuse not to test himself at a top club.

if ferguson had signed him, he would have become a top player, no doubt winning big club trophies, big games and taking that big game confidence into an England shirt too.

A bit like Gazza, he could have been a world star if he had gone to United
