Funny how this didn't even get a mention on the match thread. I guess it just ain't an issue. I heard him say it and thought no more of it. Fair play to him. Although.....Typical ****ing Dubs. Cork have a couple lads out there being gay and nobody says a word. A dub just has to talk about it and it makes the news...... AN Irish Gaelic football star has won praise from equality groups after thanking playersâ boyfriends in a post-match victory speech. Ger Brennan, captain of the St Vincentâs team that won the All Ireland club football final in Croke Park on St Patrickâs Day, made reference to same-sex relationships while thanking the people around the players whose support had made their win possible. âYou know youâve supported us all year ⦠without your support, we wouldnât have done the job today, so thanks very much,â he told the crowd during the traditional speech delivered by the winning captain. âI think just, before I get on to our management, to the family, girlfriends, boyfriends of the players, everyone involved, there is a lot of work that goes into playing for your club team and, indeed, the county.â Brennan was also a member of Dublinâs All Ireland winning county football team who won the gameâs biggest prize last September. His speech was welcomed by the Irish Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN). âI think the point is that Ireland has transformed and the GAA (Gaelic games) has transformed with it in an opening and welcoming way,â director Brian Sheehan said. Brennanâs reference has also made headlines outside of Ireland, with an article on The Huffington Post and a YouTube video of the speech featuring prominently on the Reddit sharing site. Gaelic games was one of the first team sports to have an openly gay competitor, with All Ireland winning hurling goalkeeper Donal Og Cusack coming out in 2009 while still actively playing for Cork. In January, his brother and former teammate Conor Cusack also came out.
