Competition for other targets could see Sunderland revisit an interest in Stoke defender Geoff Cameron.

The Black Cats were linked heavily with the 28-year-old throughout the January transfer window, and were even reported to have made a 'cheeky' inquiry for the defender whilst pulling the plug on Stoke City's Lee Cattermole deal at the eleventh hour.*

After Marcos Alonso, Ashley Williams was thought to be Gus Poyet's number one defensive target this summer, but strong competition from elsewhere for the Swansea captain's signature may see the Uruguayan turn his full attention to Cameron.*

Cameron was a staple part of Jurgen Klinsmann's USA World Cup squad. The defender impressed with some solid performances in Brazil as the USA made it through to the first-round knockout stages, before being cruelly despatched by Belgium.

Although predominately a centre-half, the 28-year-old played the majority of his football on the right hand side of the Potters' defence last season.*

Sunderland need to strengthen in the full-back department this summer, and it may be that Poyet visions Cameron slotting in as right-back at the Stadium of Light. But this is unlikely to appeal to the USA international, who is keen to prove his capabilities of playing in the heart of the defence.*

If reports are to be believed Sunderland could still face some competition for the defender's signature from Hull, and should the two battle it out, the prospect of European football could be enough to prise Cameron in the direction of Humberside.*

Should Sunderland consider a move for Geoff Cameron.

Versitile Centre Back? This would mean no Vergini then wouldn't it?

Yeah but Gus said he wants 7 defenders one who's versatile, we all amused it would be Vergini which has been very quiet on that front. Think Jones was Bardo's replacement.
