Gazza, was outstanding in goal today, not only stopping and saving at least three shots but also stopped corners as well, and he was getting to most crosses and catching rather than punching!, he was immense in the area and fully deserves a lot of credit. It meant a lot to the lad as well keeping a clean sheet as he came over to the fans and gave his shirt to a family member and threw his gloves into the crowd. This was then followed by a few other players who threw their shirts in as well. Cardiff worked a hard, but they were rubbish and a nil nil second half flattered them. All the saints team worked well and were mostly solid apart from some jittery moments in the first half. The Saints support was tremendous, but it was a shame to see some rows of empty seats.......never mind those not there missed a good win....COYS!!!!!
He did well, I agree. But i think it looked so good to us because of the contrast to his previous ****e games
Certainly wouldn't say he was outstanding - improved is a fair statement. It seemed clear to me that Cardiff were targeting him at set pieces as he is very hesitant coming off his line, so all the set pieces were swinging right under the crossbar and this is when Cardiff looked most threatening. Also he didn't have a shot on target against him - much easier to look good when you have nothing to save!
He did fine, made a very good save that doesn't count and did well to stop the one that deflected off Fonte but there was still one semi-howler (that hugely sliced clearance) and Cardiff didn't officially have a shot on target. It doesn't change anything though. I don't think anyone has ever suggested that Gazzaniga is so bad he's incapable of putting in an acceptable (or even good) performance every now and then. The problem with Gazzaniga (like most backup keepers) is that he makes quite a lot of mistakes and won't string together a run of good performances. It barely seems believable that it was only just over a year ago that some people were slating Boruc and saying Gazzaniga should be first choice.
Made a very good save that was nullified by offside anyway, did pretty well to keep out Fonte's deflection but really don't think he was outstanding. He did claim a couple of crosses but also punched at least 3 eminently claimable balls straight up in the air and had a bit of a whoopsie with a sliced clearance again. What I do think he did well is when things went a little bit wrong a couple of times he didn't go into meltdown and just dealt with them as simply as possible. A positive game for him certainly and one that will hopefully give him confidence but still a way to go.
Keeping a clean sheet is a good day for any keeper, however u analyse it. Itll giv the lad a much needed boost.
One shot deflected off Fonte (so probably went down as blocked) and one was offside, but well-saved, so he actually made two saves!
Thought he did look more assured but still didnt give me confidence. Lets hope the clean sheet does the trick.
