Anyone else think we should tie him down to a longer contract if possible? He could be our keeper for years to come. And I'm just reading in Monday's Sun (must be true then lol) that "Sunderland are leading a posse of Premiership scouts to GILLINGHAM to watch Argentine goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga" Also brb they are with you giving Whelpdale Man of the Match and also put him in the team of the weekend. UTG
think it's just better to accept that he will be off in the summer, everybody has said, even when he was behind flitney, that he was too good for this division. Would be massive if we could get him to stay longer but looks unlikely
Gemini - makes a change for me to be right with MOM. As for Gazza along with Essam we need to tie these lads into some lengthy contracts, I know there is always an element of risk involved but I believe they are worth it.
He obviously loves playing here and has taken to the fans and the club very well. No guarantee he would be off anywhere in the summer..he's young and will want to be playing football and won't necessarily be doing so in the Championship or Premiership. In my view, he still has a lot to learn so would be better off continuing his development here for a couple of years at least.
Unfortunately there must be little chance of keeping Gazza and the only sensible approach is to maximise the proceeds of any sale. a longer contract would help but if he is getting proper advice he would be foolish to sign it. There is a need to keep Flitney happy because he was a perfectly competent player at this level before Gazza grabbed his chance and he will be needed next season when Gazza might be learning the ropes in the Premiership. Let us hope Gazza does not do a Jason Brown and sit on the bench for years purely for money.
I think it is obvious to everyone that Paulo's future lies elsewhere, he certainly is talented enough to go further than Gillingham. However he seem to have his head screwed on, or has very good advisors as he has come to England and by signing for us he has shown an understanding that it will takes hard work to make it in football and he is willing to put the effort in. How easy would it have been for him to stay in Valenacia? As a result I wouldn't be surprised if he stayed around for another season to learn his trade and cement himself as our first choice keeper, or he will go and be loaned out somewhere (hopefully back to us but who knows)
IMO Flitney isn't good enough for this division and we will need to sign another Keeper when Gazza leaves in the summer (if he does). While he was playing for us earlier in the season I could tell why he had steadily dropped down the divisions and ended up at Dover. Bit better than Julian but nothing more.
