With the obvious dis-interest in our local supposed derby match, under 8000 tickets sold so far,the "gasheads" giving up on their team, struggling to sell 1000 tickets and a 10000 attendance regarded generally as a success. The "gas" have gone with regard to derby games, low fan base, lower league status, failed manager (McGoo) and players signing for them who are past their sale buy date,no wonder the complete lack of interest in that club,Louis you made a mistake choosing them, although done for the right reasons.Early K/O and the police ripping us off with an over the top charge doesn't help. Who qualifies as our local rivals...? Cardiff City are the only club who are really close enough geographically to create interest but they don't do it for me.. Through my years I can remember gates of 30000 plus for a derby game against the "gas",many times I've walked away feeling as sick as a pig when they have beaten us,the times we won it was magic,in work,in the pub, even on the last bus home, derby games always gave me a tingle of excitement, not now,I'm going down to support Louis but I feel as flat as a whitches tit about the game. The game is a non-entity and I'm sorry about that, maybe sometime in the future,ah well.........C'mon you REDS...
I have been to many derbies over the years, when we went through that run where we could not beat them to probably the best night for me at AG when Louis Donovan scored in the game that we won. **** me we partied hard that night and the few after. But this one will be a low key affair, speaking to some Gas heads not just on here but they are saying the same thing they don't want to pay for Louis. Shame really but it does make you realise bring back the Gloucester cup and there will be no excuses. This will be my daughters first Bristol derby and got to say, she is buzzing about this game because she has heard what I have told her about the atmosphere and buzz around the stadium. I know there will be a low attendance on both sides but I think the ones that are going will be the ones that create the songs and atmosphere for these sort of games. I have been to places like Burnley and Wigan before they moved to JJB Stadium (DW what ever it is called now)with only 400-500 fans but as always had a laugh.
It's a shame but I know that if we meet in one of the Cups this year, it will be a sell out in either ground and will be a proper game. This friendly is just nothing, means nothing to noone except your past it defender. And your right, no one wants to pay £15 for that. If it was a tenner, I probably might have thought about going
Let's not forget that a lot of fans simply don't want to go because there is a history of fighting at these derby games. The Bristol derby is something that should be on every single year, if not for charity then for fun. I'm all for poking fun at the Gas, but we're not exactly Barcelona. I'd rather see two Bristol teams as competitive rivals than one.
The Cardiff game in now stripped of all that is interesting and has become nearly just another fixture. For those of a certain age the Gas will always be the rivals. Many will have suffered their bullying when numbers were in favour.
The rivalry between 2 clubs from the same City will always be there. At the moment years of ....... let's say poor leadership, at Rovers has seen them fall to Div 4 - however, that will not last for ever, and at some point they will be more competitive. To be honest that would be good for football in Bristol
The problem is the timing of the game. I like others will not be there due to the Olympics. If this was the last game of the pre season then I would have thought it would have been a sell out but when you have the Olympics on and it is also the start of the summer holidays families have gone away. So i dont know who picked this date but it wasnt thought out very well.
Have to agree with most posters on here, apart from Wiz who appears to be contradicting himself everytime he touches his keyboard! And indeed almost had to be sectioned during cross-board banter last season. It is unavoidable, despite Rovers' current predicament in the 4th tier, that two teams from the same city with a long history of rivalry will always be main rivals. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves. The reason that this match is not selling is that it is a friendly and therefore meaningless.
I do believe it was the only available date free for one reason or another. excuses excuses, get down the gate, don't matter if it is a league, cup,or friendly it is a Derby. Both teams will want to win this game. Very poor turnout by both sets of fans.
This was not presented as an argument or a statement of faith,I was expressing some feelings, thoughts and memories to fellow Bristol City fans and I couldn't give a cows toss what a know it all "gashead" thinks or feels, you are closer to Forest Green Rovers in your status and consequently at the moment Cardiff City are our closest rivals. Playing your ramshackle outfit I do agree is meaningless.
To state that we are not your rivals any longer, presumably means you need somebody else to fill that role. If it's Cardiff, then why don't you ever take more than 400 there? It's only 40 miles. And don't re-hash all that bubble nonsense again. If you wanted to go, you'd find a way.
rovers will always be our local rivals, but as their luck has been out for quite a few years now we haven't met. So until we meet in a cup-tie our real hatred for each other will only then erupt, until then we will have to stick up with the 3-4 rovers fans that list on City's boards. A 'pre-season friendly' isn't going to pull in a large crowd, so the result doesn't mean anything. I really feel sorry for Louis, why didn't they pull a big premiership club? A big club would of been a sellout.
After years of local rivallry from eastville to trumpton to the mem i bloody love em!!!!!!! Nothing as huge as the buzz of beating them nothing as bad as the pain of loosing. The running battles in the ground in the street in the office all part of the day. Ok dont get me wrong im not suggesting that fighting is part of football but following city in the 70's 80's and 90's it certainly was. times have changed but the passion on that day never will. Irene will always be a prostitute the gas manager will as the song goes will always be a horses arse, we of a certain age will always see the gas as rivals. Hate them? only on match day!! And for gas heads if your wondering yes i was one of those that took your stand at trumpton!!
I think oldboy is getting his defence in first....meaningless match...of no consequence ...so we lost....means nothing...their cup final....let them enjoy it, they're still L2. There you are wize...I've written it for you!
Fellow Reds,do you think I ought to be worried,I don't think the "gasheads" like me very much, just in this little thread of mine where I put up a few thoughts,a bit of history and a few personal feelings to my fellow City fans and I've been attacked by Bbd,Chrisgashead,Puregas and P49 for being angry, cotradictatory, evasive, defensive, losing it and god knows what else... I really don't think they like me very much, what should I do......?
