In todays press Neville Southall came up with what i think is a great idea, a Gary Speed tribute match between Wales and a team made up of players from Everton,Newcastle, leeds,Bolton and Sheffield United..So where should it be played as along with the Millenium stadium all the clubs he played for have stadia with amazing atmospheres there. And would it be confined to present players or my preference "Past greats" .............Your thoughts
Great idea!! For me the Millenium Stadium. I know he started at Leeds but he was Welsh and loved at other clubs as well. I would guess that a charity would benefit from the proceeds so the bigger capacity would see more revenue for the cause. If ticket prices are reasonable we could fill the ground. Imagine how brilliant the sound of 70,000 supporters cheering for Gary would be. A fitting tribute.
it has to be in wales national stadium, you cant choose leeds as why not everton, bolton or sheff united, he was a proud Welshman and the manager of wales so to me it has to be the millennium stadium,.....
I think the fixture would grace and fill any venue but as he was Welsh then it has to be The Millenium for me and i think the teams should be made up of current and all time greats possibly a different combination each half
I reckon this should be produced and promoted by the FAW and therefore played at the Millenium Stadium. Questions: when, how much will the tickets be, will it be televised etc. Unless the stadium donates use of the facility including labor and local law enforcement donate their services, there are going to have to be costs to be covered. How many would attend. Is it intended as a testimonial for the family's benefit or just as a tribute and celebration of Speed's contribution to football in general and the national team. Would you really fill the Millenium for this event.
Yankee , good points and if it is taken on board by a governing body then it will all have to be thrashed out i would like the proceeds go to some sort of foundation his family would nominate, i dont think they would be interested on a personal level in any money generated but might like it going to a good cause
It can actualy go to any club or organisation he was involved in but all hypathetcal and out of our hands
Played at the Millenium Stadium and consisting of players he used to play with from all the clubs he has played with.
On the presumption that his family is financially well situated I would agree. If promoted by the FAW, any funds surplus to cost should be invested in development programs for youth in Wales.
or even share it between the LOW clubs, im sure they could use it. If it goes ahead when the seasons finished and is well marketed it could make a lot of money in the name of Garry speed.....just a thought...
i think the team should be made up o fplayers who played for those clubs when Gary Speed was there. Players like Given, K. Davies, shearer. a good mix.
Harsh to say but they won't be getting any death insurance payout, don't know how others are getting on but I'm still having a real struggle coming to terms with this. I reckon a good percentage should the match go ahead be for Gary's family.
what about the sporting chance clinic which treats footballers who have problems with depression, amongst other things..
