Wycombe's Doherty forced to retire

Football
Posted at 11:13
Wycombe Wanderers and former Republic of Ireland defender Gary Doherty has been forced to retire at the age of 34 because of a knee injury.
His 17-year career spanned 501 games for Luton Town, Tottenham, Norwich City, Charlton and Wycombe, and he also won 34 caps for his country.
"You always hope you'll be able to retire in your own time when it's right for you, but injury has forced my hand and it's one of those things you have to deal with," he said.

Like many a player he was never as bad as some supporters would have us believe but equally not as good as other supporters made out. Too error prone to ever succeed at the top but always gave 100% for the team. He would obviously have preferred to play on but retirement now has prevented him having to slide into non-league football to do that which could be a blessing in disguise.

Farewell Doc, the Ginger Pele
Big-hearted and brave,
You loved a skirmish and a melee
Where all your all you gave,
Blessed with talent maybe not
But less can also do,
Always when put on the spot
You´d do the work of two,
Made to stop at thirty-four
No shame at all in that,
All the best to you and yours
Just don´t now run to fat. ;)
