I am surprised there has been no transfer news at all about this guy yet. He's a really good young defender with the potential to be England's finest. I thought Arsenal and Liverpool would have publicly bid by now tbh. In the BBC gossip column it says that Bolton have set a deadline on when teams can bid for Cahill. Should Liverpool make an offer? I don't see centre back as a main priority right now, but with Carragher and Kyrgiakos not getting any younger he could be a good asset. Maybe it depends on whether Kelly is seen as a future right back or centre back.
Nothing seems to divide us more than the CB issue at the moment. I think it is a priority for reasons I've outlined ad nauseum in other threads. Cahill would be a decent signing for us I think, but whether or not he'll be happy as back-up is another matter.
But would he be a back up for long? I have a feeling Carragher and Skrtel will start the season in first 11, or Agger and Carragher. But Kyrgiakos is surly in his final year at LFC, and Agger and Skrtel are injury prone.
Whilst I would still like to see a German defender come in, I would still be happy to see either Cahill or Dann arrive although I don't rate them that highly, but they are as good as you can get in terms of young british defenders.
In all honesty he is massively overrated and hes not even that young at 25. He would be a good buy as dont get me wrong hes a good deffender just i highly doubt he'll ever be englands finest. in my opinion the two best young deffenders are smalling and phil jones if they carry on playing and progressing as they have. i think liverpool should just try nick a bid for samba, better than cahil and cheaper to. But I'd say after LB a new center back is deffinately needed. aggers always injured, caragher is not getting any younger or better and like most of you say kyrgiakos is quite bad and getting older. You need someone for the future to easy kelly and that wisdom bloke in, so they dont get rushed into the first team. Skrtle's your only decent deffender who is still quite young and not as injury prone as agger.
I don't think anyone's surprised you rate Smalling and Jones so highly. Cahill is actually an excellent defender. He's quick (a trait that would be of great benefit playing alongside nearly all our defenders), strong, and i think will soon be an England regular. Carroll said he's the toughest defender he's played against, and for Andy 'unplayable' Carroll to say that impresses me.
From what i've read, Bolton need to sell him. He is in his final year of his contract and I get the feeling that Owen Coyle needs him to go to fund his transfer business. I do rate him and a bid of £14M would make Bolton consider selling him.
I'm not too sure about him, there are better options out there but if we're going for an all English outlook then he's probably the best option.
Rooney said Phil Jones was the toughest defender he played against last season, apparently. I think he played for a certain team which lost 7-1 at old trafford...
There was a report recently that Owen Coyle wanted Ngog, that could put us in a decent bargaining position if we say..gave Bolton £10 million in cash and Ngog valued at £7 million.Everybody is a winner.
okay what? i dont care if your suprised or not, if your trying to say that i support united well no its the complete opposite, i dont really support any team in the prem but if i had to pick a faveorite it would probably be newcastle. you know nothing off me and i've never been pro united in any of my posts apart from maybe the time i was defending rooney where some fool said he's been a failure i disagreed. secondly i meant smalling and jones are the best young english deffenders i meant around under 21. but sure come on smart ass name a better u21 english deffender. Your kinda overestimating the fact that andy carrol is unplayable, hes in no way unplayable dont delude your self. Im taking you didnt watch alot of bolton last year, but zat knight was one of the reasons gary cahill done so good, he was there to make up for any mistakes and in my opinion was more solid. like i said i think hes a good deffender just not worth the trouble. I never rated smalling and jones so highly, i just said their the best young english deffenders U21 was my meaning, but sure prove me wrong whos better?
Well given your glittering history as a muppet it's no surprise on the Liverpool board you would talk about 2 recently signed Utd players in a topic about who Liverpool might sign.
Glad to know you didnt know any better u21 deffenders, and im the muppet. i happen to think my post made alot of sense. gary cahill is a good deffender but i think you guys should sign samba, and i just commented on how those two man united players are the two best young english deffenders which you cant obviously disprove, glad we're on the same page. also thanks for ignoring the rest of the post muppet.
Good idea. If we waited until the January transfer window, his value would plummet,he would definitely would not be a £17-£18 million defender, more like a £8-£10 million defender.I'm convinced there is two ways a players value drops one being age,and the other being the length of time they have left on their contract.
The other way is demand. If nobody wants them, or they're not in the manager's plans (Konchesky, for example) their price will be low. Also depends on current form/development. Drogba would've been cheaper aged say 22 (where players cost more based on potential as well as current ability) than he was when he joined Chelsea later on, because he only really started performing in his mid 20s. But the time left on contract is the same for everyone, particularly the last couple of years, which is why clubs always tie their best players to lengthy deals. I believe we got Suarez and Carroll on 6 year contracts, whereas most clubs only go up to 5.
Re Suarez. Having him on a lengthy deal was an excellent piece of business. Supposing and this is only a thought,Barcelona in 3 years time declared an interest and he decided that he wanted a move. Barcelona wouldn't get Liverpools attention unless they slapped in a minimum £38 milliion bid and that a minimum. You could be talking over £40 million,as Suarez would have 3 years left on his contract. Its also the reason why we stung Chelsea for such a big profit, Torres has 4 years left on his contract. 3 years or more, the ball is in the selling clubs court...anything less than that its in the buying clubs court and there is more chance of bargaining and the less time there is,the more chance of bargaining. I reckon in January and if nobody else shows an interest,we could get a once £17 million rated centre back...for £9 million.
Some good points about waiting till January for him and getting him on a pre-contract agreement, but what if another club came in for him in this window? If he is a target for Kenny, I would suspect the club would buy him now rather than run the risk of not getting him at all. Thoughts?
Maybe it's just a case of playing a waiting game. If we bid first in this window, we're highly unlikely to get him with that first bid, because other potentially interested clubs will find out/be informed and put in bids of their own and the price will rise. If we're later to the party, once a few bids have been lodged, we can match/surpass offers on the table and avoid it becoming a saga like the downing/adam deals sort of were, or we may even just not bother if the price has risen too high. Or, if no bids have been lodged, we could put in an offer close to their asking price right at the end of the window and they'd likely accept it know that he'll be worth less in January.
I'm not sure on Cahill. Seems another overpriced English player. We've already paid slightly over the odds for Carroll, Henderson and Downing although two are young and the other was a desperately needed as we have 0 wingers in the club so kind of understandable. I'd much rather go for Scott Dann if we are going for a CB as he was just as good as Cahill, I think is younger or about the same age and would cost about half the price. He's also a massive Liverpool fan so you know you would be getting 110% everytime he played for the club.
