Just been for a meeting over at Sunderland (I work in Gateshead) Pulls into a space next to this car and who is getting in?....the legend himself...Mr Gary Bennett. What's more, he was just coming out of a meeting with the same guy i was meeting (a print company who does all the SAFC printing / memorabillia etc.) Anyway, he gave me a signed copy of Gary's football scrapbook! Nice one! 5 minutes earlier though and i could have met the man himself! Never mind! A nice little moment, thought i'd share it with you lads!
I still remember the day that the red mist came down and he lifted David Speedie up and threw him into the camera box at Roker Park...absolute legend!
I met him in Annabelles once, sometime around summer 1988. I was half pissed but give him his due he wasn't at all iffy, he just put up with me until I staggered off somewhere.
Remember as a nipper...delivering papers... Bucketing down.... Nice big house just of the sea front..... Just poped the paper through the letterbox..............door opens and a woman invites me in till it stops raining so much...(it's not smutty) Gives me a packet of maltesers....then the husband appears from one of the rooms............ Mr Bob Stokoe..................... His papers were always delivered afterwards.
He's always getting the coffee's in at Durham station before the 8.20 train leaves for London away games. Nice fella.
he was an absolute rock in the semi final play off at newcastle, his best ever performance in a sunderland shirt imo (and there was some very good ones), and blackcat 22, i was about 3 feet away when he grabbed speedie, i could see the bloodshot in his eyes, **** me i'll never forget that moment as long as i live, never. Absolute legend Bennett like
I think we all remember the David Speedie moment. i was in the main stand paddocks at that game so didn't really see what happened. i remember it finishing 0-0 and then they stuffed us 5-0 in the replay!
He is a true red & white legend. I've been lucky enough to have met him quite a few times over the years and can honestly say he is an even bigger legend in real life. Polite, friendly and a very funny guy. A real gentleman and quite rightly held in great esteem by all Sunderland fans.
