He picked out 2 Villa players and 1 QPR player for a change GOALKEEPER - BRAD GUZAN, ASTON VILLA The Villa keeper was kept particularly busy on Saturday by a rejuvenated QPR. It took a number of impressive saves by the American to prevent Rangers manager Harry Rednapp claiming his first win for his new club. What I still don't understand is why Villa boss Paul Lambert continues to leave Darren Bent out of the side when his workmanlike team need all the assistance they can get. Did you know? Guzan made seven saves this weekend in the Premier League. No goalkeeper made more. RIGHT-BACK - MATTHEW LOWTON, ASTON VILLA The 23-year-old is another exceptional talent within the Villa camp who epitomises manager Paul Lambert's work ethic. Against QPR, his link-up play with Christian Benteke was particularly impressive - but Villa do lack a clinical cutting edge. Did you know? Lowton has made more tackles than any other Villa player this season (42) and is in the top 10 in the Premier League for successful tackles (35). MIDFIELD - SHAUN WRIGHT-PHILLIPS, QPR QPR boss Harry Rednapp said in his press conference last Friday that "we have got to get Shaun Wright Philips going again". It was obvious watching Shaun's performance against Aston Villa on Saturday that Harry is looking to the former Manchester City and Chelsea star to give his team the leadership and inspiration that will help lift them off the bottom of the table. Why oh why didn't predecessor Mark Hughes make that connection? Shaun looked like he was playing for a man who believed in him again. This was his best performance for months. Did you know? Wright-Phillips had four shots on goal on Saturday. The winger had tried his luck only three times in total in his previous eight appearances this season. http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rc...TuD5ZiSNZ8Xp8sKCw&sig2=AqAVPwmopF3Ccnwx0kSewQ
Morning. Nice to see but we need points, not pundit plaudits. Typically for our season, Wigan will be looking for a better show for their fans after last night.
I thought SWP showed signs he was coming good in pre season but MH had a knack for turning decent players into bad ones. I trust Harry. If he can't turn SWP around no one will.
Who would have believed that the player Harry backed to provide leadership and inspiration to our team would be SWP. Best of luck with that one Harry
A reasonable first half which included one missed sitter and a pretty anonymous second. Should be nowhere near the team of the week imo.
SWP has now had 55 shots in league matches for us and scored 0 goals!!! This selection of team of the week is purley based on SWP being involved in the two most eye catching moments of the MOTD highlights, If insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results then I dont see why SWP will suddenly come good for us. Still did not manage to beat a defender or pick out a cross and i'm pretty certain he literally didnt touch the ball in the first 20 mins of the first half. Really hope he doesn't contibute to Arry losing his job as he did with Warnock and Hughes who both realised too late that he isnt a player able to produce any semblance of quality on a regular basis.
What how you relate SWP performances to a manager losing his job is laughable. The player is teh best option we have at the moment playing in that role on Sat
He won at least half a dozen corners, he hit the post, he tackled back and he did a quality turn in the second half beating the defender and getting a shot off to win a corner. He had a very good game just accept it.
SWP had a little flourish when he first arrived and is probably having another one now Harry is giving him a bit of fresh impetus. Basically, he has produced very little for us and I can't see him turning that round now, whether or not he had a good game or not.
I'm never one to jump too much on a bandwagon be it positive or negative and I didn't think he was all that. Winning a lot of corners in his case equates to failing to beat the full-back with a cross. The one that hit the post was unlucky but the one before that was abysmal.
He has played more than 40 times for us scored 0 goals and the only assists I can remember is a scuffed cross to Barton away at Wolves last year. Sure there is a couple more than that but even so that it is a dreadful return for a right midfielder whose main barometer of performance is goals and assists. That poor return has directly contributed to Warnock and Hughes not picking up enough points during their time here and that lead to them getting sacked. That to me is a clear and direct link between the two and SWP putting a crucial one on one opportunity straight at the keeper on Saturday is a further example where he should have helped us seal 3 points and not 1. Crashing his 55th shot in a Rangers shirt without success into the post is a player who is defying the law of averages and his lack of genuine contribution should not be stood for. This is especially so when players like Hoilett and Cisse who although similarly not in form have demonstrated and proved that they can contribute in goals or assists and do no need praise for managing to win a couple of corners which as has been pointed out is more to do with their inability to get a ball in the box or dribble past a defender. Personally I hope that Hoilett is given a run in the team and allowed to get the sort of form he has proved he is capable of both for us and during the last year at Blackburn. We can't stay up because someone used to be good on pro evo and wins the odd corner
Just an observation, but i thought SWP had his 1st and only good game for us on Sat. I dont expect it to continue though.
