http://www.planetswans.co.uk/article.aspx?ArticleID=11502 Great news from my point of view. Given some of the stuff on here recently, I thought the last two sentences in the article echo sentiments I, and a few others, expressed recently... notably you don't have to be on the field to be an excellent role model. Garry Monk - Legend.
So long as he is signing it knowing he is no longer likely to be gauaranteed any starting place, as big a legend as he is, he is far from PL standard, PL squad yes, starting line up, no
Great & congrats to Gary !!! . I really do think Monk will be an important figure on the pitch for a month or so till things are all settled .
This is a loyalty reward and I am happy with that providing the sentimentality stops at team selection.
Agreed Yankee. On the pitch, if Buck thinks he deserves to play that's another matter, but behind the scenes he's got to be an amazing person to have around for the younger players.
Three years is stretching it abit in my opinion a two year contract would have been sufficient for a 32 year old.
nothing to do with loyalty, its all to do with ability and worth and buck says he will play a major part as captain this season and Alan tate will play a vice captains roll .....both players will play a significant amount of games....and so they should...well done buck as both will give 100%. ash in the wings to act as captain if both monk and tate are unavailable.....another good decision by buck...
I'm with sa14, I'd have offered 2 years perhaps with an option for a third that could be either activated by the club or by playing 40 games over the next 2 seasons. Definitely still be club captain though, even if not captain on the pitch the guy is a massive influence on the squad.
But Dai where and when will they play if HJ brings in the 20 players on £40k you reckon we should buy?
My decision (2 year + option) is pretty close to Brendan's Dai (and far closer than your "lets spend it all" idea), not sure what you're referencing to be honest.
yes he is a class act is our monk, he will give the lads great leadership having played in all 4 divisions, buck is spot on with his offer of 3 years.....
As if anyone on here would worry about what a Cardiff fan thought. I think we all trust Brendan's judgement a lot more than yours.
Misplaced loyalty, imo. Two years maximum but ideally, at his age and recent injury record, one year with 12 month rolling contract thereafter. Should he fail at that stage to cut it as a player then by all means look for a coaching role to maximise his undoubted influence. For me that is a sensible balance between rewarding loyalty and financial prudence.
why are you forecasting on age, what has age got to do with it, im sure Brendan would take that into account and there are plenty of players play first class football well into their 30's today, its a known fact that most players can play longer now than say ten years ago, look a giggsy for example, of course there will be players who cant go on but you have to judge the staff who work with these players day in day out, they would know how fit these guys are and inform Brendan how these players playing standard are likely to last for...
and that is scholes who has earned millions ....so in his case its his very easy choice,,....monk still has 3 years before he decides, i trust the club and if they say he is worth a 3 year contract then who are we who knows nothing to disagree....
Hah! I agree in fairness Dai. I doubt Monk has just been given a bumper pay deal considering his age, so worst case scenario is one of our coaches is on a decent wage for two years. If it is misplaced loyalty, I'm glad our club are the ones doing it to be honest. Too many mercenaries and money grabbers these days, so to see some reward for someone sticking with the club through thick and thin is really nice to see.
