GARRY Monk will go in search of a striker in the January transfer window after Wilfried Bony's Ivory Coast reached the African Cup of Nations.

Bony is set to miss up to five Premier League games — and potentially one FA Cup tie — in the new year after the Ivorians secured qualification this week.

When Bony departs, Bafetimbi Gomis will be the only senior centre-forward available to Monk — and the Swansea manager admits one is not enough.

"The Ivory Coast result dictates what we have to do," he said.

"We have already been looking at the players we could go for. We have to monitor every position and we've been looking since the last transfer window closed.

"We have now got a few more weeks before we finalise what we'll look to do in January, but striker is a position we need to help cover.

"We could look for a loan or promote from within, but it's likely to be a loan.

"It could be a loan with a view to a permanent deal or just something short term. We have to look at everything and that's why we're already doing our homework."

Unless Swansea strengthen, Marvin Emnes — who is not a genuine No. 9 — would be the only alternative to Gomis unless Monk looks to the club's development squad.

But despite talk of Michu's season-long loan at Napoli being brought to an end in January, Monk does not regard the Spaniard as a potential solution to the Bony problem.

"I'd have to check the details of the loan deal to see whether it was possible, but I think that was just media speculation anyway," he added.

"I haven't heard anything more about it and I am not even thinking about getting Michu back."

Bony is due to train today having flown back from Africa yesterday.

Monk must decide whether he is ready to start at Manchester City tomorrow, and he has a number of other selection dilemmas.

Jonjo Shelvey, Leon Britton, Wayne Routledge and Nathan Dyer should all be available to start, but it may be hard to tinker with the side which began against Arsenal.

I think Barrow should be considered as the back up. He's raw at the moment but exceptionally fast and skillful .... and quite frankly against Arsenal showed that he was ready for the situation and not over awed at all.

We've just announced we're in the market .... every seller is now go to push up their prices.

I reckon Gomis and Marv are already in situ to play up front.

I doubt it. How can we pretend not to be in the market? How would we buy a player without the selling club noticing that we made an offer. If they up the price they won't get a sale.

Most acquisitions and especially due diligence are done quietly behind the scenes are they not. I don't see the point of paying inflated rates for a few weeks of coverage. Much better to acquire a player on loan for the balance of the season or to have faith and use the resources you have, which is why I mentioned Barrow. We need cover for the cover ... I presume Gomis is going to step into Bony's slot, so we need somebody to play off the bench for Gomis as a tactical replacement or in the event that Gomis is injured. Emnes and Barrow are good enough to play in that role, no?

Although we've announced ourselves on the market, Yankee, I don't see us desperate to loan or buy any one in January.

Most of our goals have come from midfield, Bony tops up our total with only four. His absence, measured by his goals, can and will easily be absorbed by the players we already have imo. We may miss him more due to his defensive contribution though, he neutralises a lot of dead ball threats effectively, particularly defensive corners.

So, imo, we don't need to buy a temporary replacement for Bony, we don't buy players in transfer windows anyway do we?.

We don't buy individuals but what we do buy is Value and this stems from our simple philosophy. Our philosophy is not new as it was written thousands of years ago by some bugger for the bottle.

"The whole (the squad) is greater than the sum of its parts (the players)” He might as well have written that just for us because its how we do everything.

Value, to us, is everything to do with seeking the 'enhancement of the whole'. That's how we view our world and how we do business in it.

So if we do anything in January, i think that we would have done it irrespective of Bony leaving us for the ANC

Well what this tells me is that monk has got things well and truly under control and is not looking just at today but the future. If he thinks we will need a striker during Bony's absence then that is what we need. We cant say we will be ok with what we have if the man himself says different as he knows the squad and not us. I think it is great to finally have a manager thinking ahead and working his fingers to the bone for the club...

At that price we'd get Vasquez!
We have Gomis and Borrow is classed as a striker.
Perhaps Gylfi could fill in ... as Michu did.
    Donnelley
Or play without a striker as we did when we got promoted.

It's fine just play routledge and if the game needs a target man put on gomis. Although that might not go down well with gomis.

"I haven't heard anything more about it and I am not even thinking about getting Michu back."

This is an interesting affirmation again from Monk, and anyone who thinks that Michu's conduct was acceptable to our club can think again. Regarding cover for Bony, I think we should throw Emnes into the job, he and Gomis surely are capable of holding the 'Fort' up front for 4 or 5 weeks? I don't see the need and that lad Barrow looks a bag of tricks, so not sure we will do anything in January, I think this is some psychology trick by Monk before he hands over the role to one of our lads, let Gomis and Emnes fight it out, and may the best man win!................<ok>

Agreed, what's the point of having quality in depth if we don't give them chances like this to prove themselves. If they all pickup injuries on the other hand....
