It was a ‘very good decision’ to turn down Liverpool for Manchester City – Gareth Barry The midfielder revealed that negative chants from the club's fans led to him turning down an Anfield switch, a decision he believes has been justified by the form of Mancini's side. Because he gets paid more at City than he ever would at Liverpool...He's carp, glad we never got him.
Because that muppet of a manager he had at the time wouldn't sell to Liverpool, even after they met the ridiculous asking price of £15Million Funny how less than 12 months later, O'Neill sold him for £13million
I think its easy to over react, but if you step away from being a Liverpool fan, you can see that as it stands he did make the right decision. He's 30 so most likely has about 2 years left in him, possibly a few more, and so these next couple of seasons are it for him. This year he has played Champions league football, won the FA cup and is currently on course to win the Premiership. Since he joined Man City Liverpool have finished outside the Champions league two seasons on the bounce, lost key players and won nothing. It may be hard to take but his decision was spot on. He will also be playing champions league again next season (unless something disastrous happens) Barry seems pretty sound, not flashy, doesn't show off, just does his job. Also remember that after the failed bids from Liverpool he played another season with Villa and played his guts out. He is a good solid professional.
Maybe if he'd opted to join Liverpool, we WOULD have finished in a CL spot AND won the FA Cup last season yes?
Fantastic bit of hindsighting. Strangely, however, at the time, Citeh were clearly not in the CL and were nowhere near winning the PL. They've only been in the CL this season, so he could only now come out with this self-justifying guff. At the time, it was about cashing in for the 'Big Contract' - the only one he had a chance for when you look at his age etc. To say it was for CL etc. is simply not true. I don't blame him for making the choice - he had no ties to the club, wasn't a fan or anything. Good luck to the lad, but I just don't buy into the CL argument.
Why on Earth would your fans have been signing that? I thought the fans wanted him? Anyway it's a cheap and unnecesary shot from him that shows his lack of class more than anything else.
I suspect it was a comment on the saga and was probably aimed at either Martin O'Neill (for refusing to sell) or Rafa (for trying to offload Alonso to make space for Barry). Either way, Gareth making that the 'reason' why he didn't sign for us is a weak one. As well you might understand, given the stupid contract (wage wise) he's on at Citeh to 'compensate' for having to play two CL'less seasons there...
I heard he originally turned down Liverpool because Rafa wanted him to play on the left. Which wouldn't surprise me at all. But I reckon money played its part in his decision to.
More money and the team he went to "City" have spent alot of money to try and win trophies. I think he had more chance of winning trophies with us aswell as money.
It was sung during the Alonso/Barry transfer saga. The message was aimed at Rafa and the management, that we didnt want Barry if it was going to cost us Xabi. Rafa wanted Barry to replace Alonso and the fans were venting that, however the whole sorry affair did end up with losing Alonso one of the most important players we've had in the recent years.
I don't get why he has even opened his mouth? Who cares in all honesty? It's not as if he's gone on and been a massive success and turned into one of the best players in the World and we all feel terrible that we missed out and are dying to know why he didn't join us. Most fans are glad he didnt, he is obviously glad he didn't so it's a win for everyone. If he wants to reveal some secrets about the whole transfer why not come out with what the different contracts offered were.
I'd of done the same if i was getting abused. Nothing wrong with what he has said. I just wish we never ruffled Alonso's feathers by linking ourselves to Barry. It's history now.
bit of a history revisionist isn't he? he got soundly attacked by villa fans and bascially bottled it. City came i nunder hughes and they bought some junk.... to be honest barry is holding city back now cos he's got no legs and he fouls too much... I expect him to be replaced shortly. I think perosnally not selling alonso and not getting an over the hill player in gave us second under rafa... rafa was crazy wanting this guy. th fac tis he didn't make a right decision guys... he lucked into sven being sacked and hughes going and buying the likes of bellamy and him.... i nthe end is luck a decision? cos to be frank if mancini had managed city then he would not buy this guy. best of lcuk winning that league medal or even a europa as well but i think mr barry will find himself surplus next year but then..... his massive wages he won't care.
No, the fans really didn't mate. We were replacing a world class player who was one of our best players since 2004 with Gareth ****ing Barry. Do you think Spurs fans would be overjoyed if you were told that Redknapp was trying to sell Modric who didn't want to leave for £30m and spending £20m of it on Gareth Barry.
"Solid" as in a hard working player who has no attacking prowess or flair whatsoever and not much defensive abilities either. See Karl Henry, Michael Brown and co for more details.
