The summer arrival from Birmingham City has played a key role during pre-season and now wants to make sure he's in prime position when the real action starts at Anfield. "The first game of the season is always a great occasion and all the lads are upbeat in the camp," he told the club's official website. "Quite a few new players have come in during the summer and our aim is to progress and move up this season. "There's so much competition for places, but as I've said before I haven't come here to sit on the bench and watch people play week in and week out. "I want to play and I'll do everything I can to do that and show the Sunderland fans why the club have invested money in me." Liverpool are being hotly tipped to finish in the European places this year following the return of the much-revered Kenny Dalglish. The Merseyside club have been big spenders since the Kop legend took charge and Gardner says a top-notch commitment level and work-rate will be required from the Sunderland XI which take to the field on Saturday. He explained: "Obviously we need to work hard, keep our shape and take our chances when they come along. "In training I can see the lads' attitude and what the gaffer has instilled in us. "We're not a team that is going to roll over and let opponents take advantage of us. "Of course we will respect Liverpool as a club but when that whistle blows we'll be fully focused on what we have to do." i really like this guy seems to have a great attitude and if he can score a few goals like he did last season, im sure he will be a massive hit with the fans!! always seems to say the right things ha'way the lads got a good feeling about today!

Six nightshifts off the trot have left me with eyes like owld inspector Taggart. Will put the alarm on but weather I actually rouse or not is another thing. Mind you, if we actually manage a win I will definately be aroused.
