Charnley was spotted at NCL airport yesterday waiting for a Paris flight.

Dunno how I feel about this to be honest. He did a decent job at Lyon, but do we really want yet another Frenchman at the club?

Massive risk and I'd have much rather we went for an exciting young English coach.

If true though, the truth is it could have been much worse.

I'd like to see an exciting English coach. Not going to happen under Ashley though.

I think there's a bigger risk with a young English coach. We're in a disposable society and it would take the boo boys days to get on the back of someone like Eddie Howe. For all your personal opinion is get Howe in, give him years, reality isn't the same and for many "fans" it would be seen as just picking up some bloke from the Championship. I mean, even McLaren with all his experience I would suggest wouldn't get the same level of freedom as a "glamorous" foreigner like Garde or Tuchel, BECAUSE he's English, not in spite of that fact.

That's not to say I don't agree with you - I personally felt McLaren would have been brilliant, best appointment we could have made. Outside of that, Garde is one of a dozen names that, as a Newcastle fan, you have to be happy with.

I can't have that. I think the risk is greater with a foreign coach. We all saw how quickly fans turned on the French players when things weren't so good. We went from folk turning up in berets (which to be fair was largely a bit of fun), to them calling them weak willed non triers.

Fans don't really care what nationality a coach is. At Newcastle they will jump all over them whether they are English, French or ****ing *****lian.

The risk factors for me are the knowledge of the game here, the ability to work under certain restrictions, an ability to supply the kind of football fans want to watch, experience of dealing with high pressure situations. If we took Garde and Howe as examples, I think Howe ticks more boxes.

Garde played a very small amount of football here. He was here for long enough to learn about the game but in terms of knowing the game here, obviously Howe has a greater knowledge. In terms of working at a big club then Garde has been at Lyon so he has the edge there. Both can supply the type of football that fans want to watch. In terms of working with meagre budgets and under restrictions, then Howe would obviously have the edge there. High pressure situations, neither has really had that in their career. Garde did well initially in 2011. Then PSG had an influx of capital which meant he was never going to find it easy in thereafter. Their fans understood this. Howe has done well at Bournemouth and ok at Burnley.

Eddie Howe would be just a risky decision in my opinion, of course I would of preferred someone young and English like him, but he didn't do too great a job at Burnley and they were promoted following him leaving... So apart from winning matches in both League 1 and then the championship I would say there is no indication that he can manage in the premier league at all until he has actually managed there. So considering that, he is not different than Garde in all actuality.

Eddie Howe could simply be good for Bournemouth, the one club guy who might be more suited at a club of that size. He doesn't know the Premier League either and could easily be a disaster for us.

I think a risk you've hugely overlooked is the "star" factor. Not many of these PL players are going to listen to perceptively small-time Eddie Howe. He's not rocking up with winners medals, or a big reputation, and our boss has to cope with that side of management. Pardew's an arrogant SOB, which is why he gets away with it in spite of a lack of real european rep.

In many respects both are similar - similar football, similar constraints, but Howe will be aiming for transfer input, management responsibility, whereas Garde is really used to a way of working that we want to do. Another lowered risk. Personally I agree with Van Gaal in that there's not really a great deal of difference in player ability, it's about organisation and this is probably where Howe is better equipped.

There's pro's and con's for sure, but what we have to accept is that Howe isn't coming and Garde probably is! So it's really all a moot point.

Paul Tisdale was mentioned, he's performed minor miracles at Exeter, but is he right for the club?

My choice would be McClaren, but i have feeling if Garde is installed as head coach he will be successful with us.
Could be worse, Sherwood is now even-money on skybet

Indeed. I love John Still as he has done miracles at Luton, his previous job at D&R was incredible as well as he did an amazing job there but that doesn't mean I think he would fit as manager for Newcastle. You make a good point in your other post mate regarding player perception. Would they give time to a Championship manager in Eddie Howe and also would they give him the respect any coach/manager would crave? I'm not so sure. Pardew did alright because of his sheer ****ing arrogance, I'm not sure if Howe is in that sort of **** league like him.

There is a definitely a question of respect. However we've had plenty of big names who've struggled to get respect. Garde isn't that big of a name too, lets not dress it up. He hasn't achieved much either as a manager or a player. For sure if we were talking about Frank De Boer then its a different kettle of fish. But Garde is neither a big name to the English or indeed the French players.

Every manager is a risk, regardless of reputation. Its about being a good fit. This thing with Howe having found his level at Championship could be true. However you'd have to think his style of football and management certainly fits the bill of a modern attacking PL manager. This is not like say a Steve Bruce or Pulis type scenario where they will always get you promoted and often keep you in the division for a year or two. This is a developing young manager who looks to have a very bright future.

What players respect is how you operate. The likes of Mourinho, Van Gaal, Wenger all had pretty low key playing careers. The respect they enjoy now comes from the way they have operated as a coach.

I accept if we were talking about a big name former player, or big name already established manager, then respect could come into it to a small degree. As it is we are talking about Remi Garde. And how you operate is what really matters.

Someone made a good point of course, it won't be Eddie Howe. My point is PL clubs are far too quick to look abroad and it is hurting our game in terms of opportunity. There isn't actually any sound reasoning behind it now we have coaches who being educated the right way. You can always make an excuse to say the risk is this or that. It just doesn't stack up for me and is exactly that, an excuse that has been fed to us by pundits, media and all these other parasites riding the PL bandwagon over the last 20 years.

Personally I'm more interested in seeing coaches in this country being given a chance. I'd like to see them doing well here and then being the ones going abroad. Some of these guys are travelling round Europe often expending their own money to learn from the best. Then they come back but find that they are too much of a risk. It stinks for me.

That's not really the choice though, is it ?

The real choice is: Garde for at least 18 months or Carver for 4 months and then the best person available in the summer.

Less easy than a straight Garde vs Carver choice. The season is already over except for avoiding relegation. We have a 10 point lead over the relegation zone. Do we want to take the best person available now or wait until there is a broader selection ?

That is a tougher choice. The difficulty comes from not knowing what the intentions of the owner are. There is no mission statement to work to. If we knew that his intentions (regardless whether he makes the right choice or it works out), were simply to get the best possible candidate for the role, it may be tempting to suffer a bit of short term pain with Carver. I suppose if his intentions are not entirely honorable anyway, then someone like Garde, who I imagine is after decent going rate type wages, probably wouldn't be in his thoughts now or in the future. Also if we were being prepared for sale in the summer, then having a temporary manager on a rolling contract is very appealing to a prospective owner.

What will be will be I suppose.
