Some games are easy to remember *your first match *a bad defeat *coughliketodaycough* *a great win *cup finals or semi finals But there are others that mean nothing and have been forgotten by all except you. I have two that stick out for me. The first was from when i was a kid. We beat coventry in 82 i think by 4 nil. It sticks out cos it was the first hattick i had seen...and it was scored by garry Brooke. The second was a 4 2 win in the carling cup v Liverpool. It took place on the anniversary of my sons death who died at birth ...would have been his 14th birthday . After he died i split from his mum. I eventually ensnared Mrs remembercolinlee and we had 2 girls . I have taken them to matches including wigan 9 1(what a great birthday present that was for my eldest daughter!)...anyhow...going to that Liverpool match on that day was like taking my son to a match...so after i felt like i had been able to take all my kids to a spurs match. I hope this hasn't dragged everyone down but last Tuesday was the 18th anniversary and although today was pants i can smile at the memory. If you've managed to drag yourself through this less than hopeful thread i would love to hear of other games that live in your memory which we have all forgotten.
Heres a few to be going on with: The UEFA Cup ties in 1972 were all special for me - first year that I had gone to games 'solo' and all the euro evenings were amazing. But the game that I recall more than others was v Red Star Belgrade and in particular a wonderful team goal rounded off by Alan Gilzean, sliding in at the near post. August 1980 and an away league fixture v Palace at Selhurst Park. I was perched up on the Holmesdale End with a great panoramic view of pitch. The football played that night by the likes of Hoddle, Archibald, Crooks et al was some of the best I have ever seen to this day. Ended 3-4 to us which was closer than it seemed at the time, so good we were that night. And if I recall, Vince Hilaire got sent off for lamping Hoddle...... Finally, the defeat that always sticks in the craw for me was the FA Cup replay defeat v Derby at the Lane in February '73. We lost 3-5 AET and a young lanky striker called Roger Davies scored 4!! Great post RCL and sorry to hear about parts of it. - Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle. Sir Bobby Robsons first game in charge of Newcastle. We did well and they had little of the game. Frank Lebouef pen settled it. - Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea. I was chronically ill over Christmas, so much so that I spent my entire Birthday and Christmas in bed. I'd had tickets to this game for. While and was looking forward to it. It was the first day I was physically able to leave the house although I still wasn't 100%. Trekked across the river to watch us go 3-0 down after 60 minutes. Typical Chelsea though, always build you up to let you down. - Spurs 1-6 Chelsea. Definitely. Up there with the best results we've had in (proper) London derby. - Chelsea 2-0 Boro, 1997. To this day I've never experienced anything like it. I wasn't there but the area I live in and South West London in general was absolutely buzzing.
12th November 1980 Spurs v Crystal Palace Barry Daines Goalkeeper DefenderPaul Miller DefenderChris Hughton DefenderDon McAllister Defender/Centre backJohn Lacy Defender/MidfielderSteve Perryman MidfielderOssie Ardiles MidfielderRicki Villa Midfielder Glenn Hoddle ForwardSteve Archibald ForwardGarth Crooks Spurs 4 Palace 2. with a hatrick from Garth Crooks and 1 from Steve Archibald. For various reasons I had not been to WHL for a number of years and this was the first game I attended with a season ticket obtained from a family member. It was great to be back at the Lane again and Spurs were flying with one move I remember where the ball appeared not to touch the ground for the length of the pitch as it zipped from player to player. Unstoppable stuff. Especially sweet as I had recently been to Selhurst Park with another family member who was a Palace fan telling me I should support Palace because I only lived 3 miles from their ground, I was unimpressed and told him I would continue my support for Spurs who played 'proper football' He saw that 'proper football' a couple of weeks later when he came with me to WHL.
I would have sworn I saw Peter Taylor bombing down the wing in that game but I must have confused it with another match as apparently he didn't play that day.
Coincidence Corner, Spurf!! I was brought up in Streatham and most of my mates were Palace (or Chavs!!). I used to go to SP quite regularly when Spurs were away etc but never had a moments doubt about where my loyalties lay. A few great games there not involving Spurs - notably their first ever game in the top division against ManUre - 2-2.
Spurs 3-0 Leicester, Les Ferdinand got a hat trick. Think the year was 2002 and it was also a birthday present from my Uncle as my birthday is the 30th November and the game was on the 26th. Was a great result and at the time I was a huge Sir Les fan so to see him score a hat trick - the first I'd seen live - will be something that sticks with me for all my life (I hope!). Charlton 0-2 Spurs. The first away league game I went to. We relegated Charlton and Berbatov scored one of the best goals I'd ever seen. Received a strong pass on the ground from, done an amazing flick with the outside of his foot to round El-Kadouri (sp?) and then slotted it past the keeper. Truly amazing piece of skill. Spurs 3-1 Watford. I can proudly sing the chant of "I was there when Robbo scored! I was there when Robbo scored!" First and probably last time I'll see a keeper score from 80 yards! Spurs 6-4 Reading & Spurs 9-1 Wigan. Both games (similar to the Les Ferdinand part above) were the first times I'd seen a player score 4 (Berbatov vs Reading) and then 5 (Defoe vs Wigan) and so they'll live long in the memory. In fairness these will live long in the memory of all others so it's not like I've picked ones all of us have forgotten but as I said, they meant a bit more to me in terms of it being the first times I'd seen a player score that many goals in a game.
Didnt get to many games when i was younger, but the ones I recall most. My first v Stoke Park Lane end, The great Gordon Banks playing for Stoke, Pratt scored 2 in a 4-3 win. The other a loss, but a great experience. Home game v Liverpool I think 1973, first time standing in the shelf side pouring rain, the reds were at their unstoppable best,Keegan & Toshack scored the atmosphere was electric.
...("just so you guys are aware that my birthday is in 11 days time and might want to say happy birthday or get me a present... hint hint".) LOL First game was a 1-1 draw at home to Wimbledon on 24th Nov 1993. I remember the day so clearly. It was bloody freezing but the build up to the game was fantastic for me as an 8 year old. The train to london and the tube to see a few sights before heading to the ground. I was completely overwhelmed by the amount of people, the stands, the noise... and to be honest... it was miles better than the game I witnessed! Bad defeat -There's been a lot for various reasons. Too many games which we should have won on paper, but have just been dreadful. One that stands out for me for slightly different reasons though, is the Real Madrid game in the CL. None of us our right mind expected a win, but it was all about the experience of the Bernabeu and just carrying on what'd been an amazing CL experience. The night was completely ruined by Crouch's red card and we were thumped 4-0. I don't expect we'd ever have got a result, but it would have been nice to have had 11 men for 90 mins and not 15mins, and just given them a fair, even game to the best of our ability. If we could have come away with perhaps a 2-0 defeat, it would have made for a great game at WHL, as we'd have had nothing to lose. But the first fixture completely ruined the second fixture and put a dampener our entire CL experience, IMO. Great win - well, being only 27, i've not actually witnessed the stereotypical "great wins", which are usually connected to games in which involve a trophy being won. Little has happened in terms of trophies for my generation, so it literally just comes down to a "good game". Spurs 3-1 Inter Milan is definitely up there for me. we absolutely battered a team who at the time were outstanding. Even the 4-3 away defeat with all the problems was still a great game which showed our character. But the 3-1 in particular was just amazing they were absolutely torn a new one by little old Tottenham who were "going to finish bottom of their CL group" and "don't stand a chance in hell" in the CL. very proud that night. the 2-6 win at the dell against Southampton was another cracker. Or, The Ronny Rosenthal show as it is also known as! was also going to say the reading game and wigan games, but SOS has already mentioned it.
