They'll have clubbed together, put someone in charge of organising it and left them to it. It's not like on a coach trip where you can look out the windows and realise the driver is going the wrong way when the signs say Edinburgh instead of London.
It's amazing that people do that. I organize trips for friends and they leave their brains at home and leave me to sort everything for them, including where and what to.eat! Wasn't there a similar story where abramavich's relative got a taxi to Stamford bridge and was taken to the village near York?
