Full text of the letter Newcastle United sent to the Chronicle

Dear Darren,

Regarding the following articles:

The Chronicle – “ Get out of Toon: Fans plan protest march in bid to oust Ashley ” (page 1 September 7)

The Chronicle – “ Toon campaign groups hoping to oust Ashley ” (pages 2 – 3, September 7)

The Chronicle – “ Fans hoping to replace Ashley ” (back page, September 7)

The Chronicle – “ Time for change – time for Newcastle fans to take charge of their own club ” (pages 50 – 51, September 7)

Sunday Sun – “ This weekend will prove how angry fans really are ” (pages 98 – 99, October 13)

The Journal – “‘ Lack of ambition’ sees fans take to the streets ” (page 12, October 19)

The Chronicle – “ March if you want him out ” (page 1, October 19)

The Chronicle - “ Anti-Ashley protesters set to take to the city’s streets ” (pages 2 - 3, October 19)

Sunday Sun – “ Hundreds join protest march as Kinnear outlines United’s position ” (page 96)

I write in reference to the above coverage in The Chronicle, The Journal and Sunday Sun regarding the protest march on Saturday 19 October by a small number of Newcastle United fans operating under the campaign name Time4Change.

It is quite frankly staggering that you devoted 15 full pages, including two front page splashes, a back page, three double-page spreads and a remarkable six full pages in one (September 7) in The Chronicle to a protest march which ultimately was attended by approximately 300 supporters. Even if the 1,000 supporters expected by the organisers had marched your coverage would have been disproportionate. Given the turnout was significantly less than this, in fact only just over a quarter of that anticipated, something your coverage following the march failed to reference or reflect whatsoever, you should be in no doubt as to the strength of feeling that exists within the club in relation to your coverage.

Indeed after reviewing all of the above articles, and in particular, the front page headline and a large map outlining the route of the march, spread over two pages in The Chronicle on 19 October it is our opinion there was an underlying message of encouragement and support provided by your titles in the lead-up to the day and on the day itself.

We feel strongly that the turnout at the march renders your extraordinary coverage completely disproportionate. Furthermore it is evident from the scale and prominence you devoted to it that your agenda was the pursuit of sales based on an anti-Newcastle United stance, rather than a fair and balanced approach.

We could never dream of generating this level of coverage, over such an extended time-frame, for some of our positive news such as some of the fantastic work undertaken by our Foundation in the local community which benefits so many or the recent announcement of reciprocal ticket pricing for away fans which received a fraction of the coverage of the march.

Having given due consideration to the above and your response to my email of Monday 21 October, the club’s owner, director of football, board of directors and team manager have reached a unanimous decision that the three NCJ Media titles, The Chronicle, The Journal and Sunday Sun, will not be permitted access to any media facilities, press conferences and player interviews at Newcastle United indefinitely and with immediate effect.

We do not require a reply to this letter, our position on this issue is not up for negotiation.

Nice one mate .......... the club mimicking the supporters and showing a totally deluded self concept.

It takes quite some level of arrogant stupidity to shoot yersel in the foot, reload and do it again!

Banning the press is never a good move and will only allienate the fans even more ..... which seems to be Ashley taking revenge for the death threats and Cockney Mafia banners in the ground etc.

I reckon the letter is spot on, I'd expect the same for our local media if they focused on the bad bits.

What the **** are they marching for anyhow? Get Ashley out because he saved them from certain liquidation then bankrolled them when they were relegated to get them straight back up? He's invested in young players and given their club some direction, his only crime at Newcastle is not having a great boardroom or manager, but inherently as a person he tries to buy cheap as per his sports empire so at what point are they expecting any quality substance?

Do they wanna go back to the good old days of Mullet Hero Kevin the human sleeping pill in the 90's when they were covered in glory and winning every trop...what? They didn't win? Anything? Fergie what? Well that's embarrassing.

If I was Ashley I'd buy Rangers as an investment and sell Newcastle to Dennis Wise and Joe Kinnear for a quid. I'm sure Pompey fans would rather he took over than their circus of owners.

Thing is, if the club had just laughed at the scruffy handful of knackers trudging around the TOOOOOOON it would've been quickly forgotten.

Now, I'll guarantee it will encourage more to march and there'll be threads, about the letter, on every Mag board.

Plus, they won't have the local press as their puppets and Ryder will be looking over his shoulder

The problem is, their fans appear to have just one voice and it's that boring, boring ****** that always appears on Sky 'representing' their fans. Steve something or other. What a clown to have as head of a supporter's trust. It's as if he's the Pied Piper of Newcastle, the bloke seems to get his thrills from moaning, **** knows what he'd do if Ashley and co did take off. All the supporters bang on about Joe Kinnear but their representatives are equally moronic. A geordie mate of mine from the forces retweeted a link to some baldy angry bloke who claims to be some cage fighter, he seems to be another one who they openly encourage to challenge the regime, have you or has anyone seen his videos? Think his name is true geordie or something, I watched a couple in amazement, and I'm convinced that if Ashley and Kinnear agreed to sit down with these people and finally asked them to get their worries off their chest they'd just say "Aaahv got nee worries mate, aah just wanted to come te call ye a ****".

Whenever I have seen this guy interviewed (not that much to be honest) it always strikes me he is trying his level best to come across as an, in control, level headed, intelligent and very football savvy bloke. What I am actually seeing is a self centered, self Righteous thicko who thinks he is the mouthpiece of the Geordie nation....a bit of a cock really

I see some muppets around Stretford on a match day from time to time but they barely get acknowledged, this guy seems to be a ****ing emperor of Newcastle and he's Mr Go To for any media outlet wanting a fans perspective. Hahahaha that's ridiculous.

I've only ever met decent Newcastle fans to be honest, even when I went to St James' Park but I don't doubt that these clowns exist in numbers. Every club has got them but they have a knack of making it into national press more often than the rest. If I was a toon fan I'd be more ashamed of Steve Wraith than the guys in the boardroom at the club.

 

Terry does make a really sensible point.

Ashley bought the club when no one else was interested and no one is interested now.

The Wongaloids must seriously believe that the boycoutts, Cockney Mafia banners, the mock funerals, the marches, the protests and death threats are giving them the chance for a new owner to step in.

If I was a possible buyer I'd take one look at the scruffy bellends, get on my horse and ride of of TOOOOOOON.

If NUST hadn't vanished with all those donations it might be a 'fan run club' now.

Whenever you speak to 'decent Mags' they'll always claim the problems are caused by 'handful of idiots' ........ if it's true, they must be the busiest idiots in the country.

To be fair the Cockney Mafia banner was applauded around the ground so the 'decent' contingent aren't entirely blameless.

 

Dunno Smug, most of our fans (if not all of them) would prefer the Glazer's not to be in charge of United. I'd expect us to have more idiots than any other club by fan base alone but something seems disproportionate up there. Like I say I've never had trouble from Newcastle fans so I can't really speak from personal experience, it's just what gets into the mainstream media, seems like they are a busy lot. I guess there'd be an element of shame from us if we did something similar, we aren't a one club city so we wouldn't want to hang our dirty washing out in the streets for City fans to laugh at us, I guess Newcastle don't have this issue.

I haven't watched many of them, just couple a few months ago so maybe he's reined it in a bit now but he was a mental nutter. I'm sure I saw him kick over his pot noodle in anger on one of them! If you look how many views his videos get he's obviously got a decent fan base, if the fans are going to base their feelings on what a couple of nutters are saying then they will end up on the tele being laughed at.
