Louis Dennis was on target as Pompey beat Fulham 1-0 in a friendly at the London club’s Motspur Park training ground.

The summer signing scored a fine effort in the second half against a side that the Blues will be hoping to face in the Championship next term.

There were welcome appearances for midfielders Andy Cannon and Bryn Morris following injuries, while Alex Bass, Brandon Haunstrup, Adam May and Anton Walkes also featured.

Neither side looked particularly threatening in the early stages, but the game improved as time went on.

Dennis had the first opportunity to break the deadlock and sent a shot inches past the post of Cottagers keeper Magnus Norman.

Marlon Fossey then went close at the other end, although his goal-bound effort hit Brandon Haunstrup to divert it over.

Pompey’s left-back soon had a chance of his own when the ball dropped invitingly and his attempt narrowly cleared the crossbar.

Mattias Kait threatened on the right for Fulham and after his first cross was cut
out by Walkes, the second was well claimed by Bass.

But it was the Blues who almost scored just before the break, as Josh Flint sent a deep delivery into the box and Dennis saw his effort deflected just wide.

Half Time: Fulham 0 Pompey 0

Bass came off his line to bravely save at the feet of Kait after the midfielder charged through on goal following the restart.

It was Pompey who finally took the lead on the hour mark, however, as the ball came down and was fired into the bottom corner by DENNIS.

Norman then made a brilliant one-handed save to prevent Dan Smith from increasing the advantage with a close-range header moments later.

Bass was called into action to deny a Fulham trialist, although there were otherwise few problems for the visitors to deal with.

Dennis might have wrapped things up for the Blues late on, but a free-kick from the edge of the box was tipped over by Norman.

First team coach Jake Wigley said: “I was really pleased with the attitude of all our players throughout the game.

“Louis scored a fine goal and although Fulham had a couple of good chances, we also had opportunities to add to the scoring.”

Pompey: Alex Bass; Anton Walkes, Haji Mnoga, Joe Hancott, Brandon Haunstrup; Adam May, Bryn Morris; Dan Smith, Andy Cannon (EoinTeggart 70), Josh Flint (Oscar Johnston 61); Louis Dennis
Subs not used: Petar Durin, Tom Bruce, Charlie Bell, Alfie Stanley
