Article by Kareem Copeland, Around the League Writer Published: Dec. 18, 2012 at 02:38 p.m. Updated: Dec. 18, 2012 at 03:42 p.m. The New York Jets have announced that quarterback Mark Sanchez will be benched this week against the San Diego Chargers. Greg McElroy, not Tim Tebow, will start. The Jets sent out the following tweet: "#EA Greg McElroy has been named the Jets starting QB for Sunday's game with the San Diego Chargers." The 14-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans was the final straw for Sanchez. He threw four interceptions and fumbled the ball on the Titans 25-yard line to end the final chance at a rally. Sanchez has thrown 13 touchdowns, 17 interceptions and completed just 54.8 percent of his passes this season. The bigger news is Tebow was passed over by McElroy, who was inactive vs. the Titans. Tebow was signed during the offseason to be the No. 2 quarterback, and when Sanchez is finally yanked, he's passed over? That in itself speaks volumes about how the coaching staff views Tebow. McElroy is not the quarterback of the future, so where does that leave the Jets? The Tebow talk was constant throughout the season. It slowed recently with his injury. This will ramp it back up. The Jets are officially a mess.
The end of an era...I mean error. Sanchez was OK with great players around him. He is downright AWFUL with OK talent as his supporting cast. No big surprise that Tim Tebow isn't the next in line. I feel bad for him but understand that he can only thrive in a system built specifically for him. The Jets aren't going to do that, although they probably should. If you are going to go through an upheaval of the offense, why not really go for it?
Wow, am I the only one who thinks Tebow should get a shot at this...? I only voted for him because that's why they brought him to NY, to put pressure on Sanchez and if he crumbles to step up and take over.
Sanchez could be a decent QB in the right system. Tebow could be a decent QB in the right system. McElroy could possibly be a better-than-decent QB (I mean, since we've never really seen him play who knows?) in the right system. One thing I am pretty sure about it is the "right system" does not involve Rex Ryan. I think it's funny how Ryan's "loyalty," rather than preserving Sanchez's career has totally ruined by putting him time and again in positions where he was destined to fail. I don't know why Tebow should have any particular claim to the starting spot over McElroy. But if Tebow doesn't start this year and gets traded in the off-season (whether or not Ryan is fired) that's probably the best thing that could happen to him anyway.
He's back! Mark Sanchez will start the last game of the season, against the Buffalo Bills. McElroy has a concussion and Tim Tebow has thrown a fit. Since Tebow isn't in the 2013 plans and Sanchez is under contract next year, I guess it all makes sense. Sanchez had his best game of the year against the Bills. Maybe he can win the game and move the Jets down a few slots in the NFL Draft order, so they get a less talented player!
