I read this last year.....Our wage bill is far too high for a club with just 20,555 average attendance (it's even higher now) and the merchandise needs improving plus sponsorship revenue looks like we are selling ourselves short. We are doing ok but heavily reliant on TV games where having good cup runs is a must to boost TV & Broadcasting revenue. These figures of course are out of date now and when they come to do the figures at the end of the season they wont look as good as these. I think our borrowing will increase significantly this season .... We definitely need a bigger stadium if we are to improve sponsorship deals and merchandise sales.....

Great read, and underpins the issues we have even with £100+ Million turnover, the statement below from Huw, also highlights the issues that even a club like us would encounter if relegated.

Under ‘Principal risks and uncertainties’ in the report signed by chairman Huw Jenkins, it states: “These have not changed. The major risk continues to be relegation from the Premier League and the adverse effect it would have on liquidity, operational activity and ability to realise future plans.” - Huw Jenkins

I still feel we have made some bad transfers that have caused us to have even less ability to manoeuvre this last season or so, and it's why we needed funds in first from the Shelvey sale, before we could bring in the Striker, and I would have preferred to have seen the leech Go-miss offloaded also, as he is a serious drain on our resources, with no real return, add to that the wasted funds on Eder and Tabanou, then it's clearly a hard lesson learned for Huw Jenkins, who has in fairness manoeuvred well this transfer window given the current financial constraints that we temporarily find ourselves in, it's clearly imperative that we get our transfers right, more than wrong given the current dependancy we have on TV revenue, and it's why we need to seriously look at our commercial dept, for better growth and contribution to overhaul turnover, 10% is not good enough and needs improving...................<ok>

PS: Clearly we could do with another 10,000 or 20,000 more seats in the stadium, with the extra revenue that would bring, but it looks like a chicken and egg situation at the moment, but I hope the board see the importance this would bring, we must grow our revenue, and keep wages in check, they have grown to high in my view, reducing our room for manoeuvre..............<ok>

In this first season in which the Premier League will break the billion pound transfer mark , it becomes even more important for most teams to keep their eye on the "Moneyball ". Frugal is the only way forward for most , and it's how we stayed for 5 seasons so far .We strayed a bit the past two seasons but hopefully we're back on track .

£90m + sounds a lot of money but 82+% is taken up with wages, bonuses and travel costs. Our other income is very small for the club to effectively compete with bigger clubs and that is why we have to borrow money even though we made a lot of money from transfer sales......We are far from skint but most of our money is tied up and there is little to play with, I think we have gone overboard in the wages department and need to cut this down by at least 30% to get back on track. We are not the only ones cutting their wage bill as most of them are and they have better attendances and better sales than us. We cant afford to get relegated that's for sure.

So basically Wilf scored a bucket load of goals, then his transfer has helped us stay in profit. What a legend,

"26th richest club" is a misnomer, as the article states. If the table was based on profit then we'd be well down the list. Not our fault of course, we're just too small to compete in the "profits" table.

The club's wobbled recently but it sounds like a lesson has been learned and with not too much damage. Unless something drastic happens financially though then we're going to have to accept that we're a mid table side at best (give or take a little) as we have no choice but to balance the books. And that's a good thing, no matter how desperately the supporters would like to see the club sign "better" players. I'd rather we carry on like this and enjoy the odd high rather than go all out for a glory season or two and then implode.

Maybe Huw's pulled another rabbit out of the hat with Guids, as he's reknowned for over achieving with smaller clubs. Let's hope so!

I think Swansea has way too small a catchment area for a 40,000 seater stadium. 30,000 is pushing it but doable - just. It's pretty obvious we need to be a little more creative in two areas - marketing (merchandise etc) and buying bargain basement players who can do a job for us before selling them on at a big profit. I guess that's what smaller clubs like us have to do to survive. Yes, we've had a good track record with Shelvey, Bony and others but recent acquisitions have been a waste of money and the margins are such that we can't afford that.

    Lessons must be learned.

An excellent read for sure. Interesting two figures 82% turnover comes from TV: 69% (more this period) goes on wages. This wage inflation following TV income increases is what is buggering up the game, I reckon.
