    Friday night live.

    Just seen this on NUFC.com

Following an encouraging run of results and a downturn in the fortunes of their nearest rivals, the final weeks of the U21 reserve league season are starting to get interesting.

Next up for the Magpies is a home game against Crystal Palace this coming Friday evening that will be staged at St. James' Park with a 7pm kickoff - season ticket holders and members are admitted free.

Anybody fancy going along to give the youngsters a bit of a lift?

See some of tomorrow's stars in action?

Was going to post that but got caught up in something else.

Cheap as chips, I didn't think they'd try to fleece us.

    I was working late yesterday
thought someone might of followed up with the result

    from NUFC.com

    Newcastle U21s 4 Crystal Palace U21s 0

Newcastle reserves extended their unbeaten run to nine games after a resounding victory at St. James' Park on Friday night that featured a Gabriel Obertan hat trick.

    Do not adjust your set.

Absent from the senior side since late March, Obertan featured as an over-age player last week for the U21s and reprised his centre forward/captain role on Friday.

And the number nine took just three minutes to open the scoring, racing away from his marker to reach a fine ball out of defence by Romain Amalfitano before firing a low shot into the Leazes End goal from 12 yards.

Having beaten league leaders Reading earlier in the week, the Eagles looked to bounce back and visiting defender Ryan Innis headed a 16th minute free kick narrowly over Jak Alnwick's crossbar.

United doubled their lead on 25 minutes after a sustained spell of pressure, Rolando Aarons curling home a superb effort from the right hand edge of the area for his second U21 goal - both of which have come against Palace.

It was 3-0 after 48 minutes when Obertan netted his second goal of the evening with a similar effort to the first, 'keeper Dave Gregory getting a hand to his shot but failing to prevent it from hitting the back of the net.

No less than four Palace players then found their way into referee Martin Coy's notebook, while Kwesi Appiah wasted the chance to give his side a foothold in the game by blazing wide of the target after James Tavernier's rick.

Obertan then became the fourth Magpie to register a reserve hat trick this season (after Adam Campbell, Brad Inman and Xisco) when he was put through the middle and left with just Gregory to beat on 76 minutes.

Although the Frenchman's initial shot was blocked, the rebound fell into his path and he knocked it into the unguarded Gallowgate End goal.

Coming close to scoring a fourth, Obertan also capped a lively display by setting up Amalfitano to shoot wide. And the margin of victory could have been even greater, with substitute Jonathyn Quinn twice denied from close in.

Palace threatened a consolation with two minutes left, as a substitute let fly from similar range to Aarons. However Alnwick clawed it round the post to preserve his clean sheet and boost what could be vital goal difference.

The result maintained United's hopes of progressing to the national finals with two games to play. That would require them to top Group Two and then beat the Group One winner (either Everton or Aston Villa) in a one-off game.

That would see the Magpies qualify for a place in the final stage alongside the top three Elite Group finishers, who look like being Manchester United, Liverpool and Spurs.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

If it had been a local lad who had scored a hatrick for the reserves we would all
be shouting to give him a go in the first team, but Obertan ????

Was at the game with DT. It was decent, but before anyone asks why he isn't in the team after a hattrick. All the goals were exactly the same, and Gabby was nothing but a spoilt brat on the pitch.

He sulked around, and did very little but attempt unnecessary flicks and then wait upfront for a ball over the top, at which point he'd mo past the lanky Cbs and just hit the target (their keeper was crap, he should have saved all the shots bar Aarons effort). Then he'd go back to complaining at his team-mates and doing no work, arrogant arse. If he was good enough he'd be first team.

Of the others, Amalfitano was ok, he put through some nice balls and was the creative heart. He doesn't look like a first team player though... Aarons, bar a wonder-goal, was shocking... The CBs were decent, especially satka... The rest of the midfielders aren't going to hit the heights of league 2... The best youth player by miles was Kevin... Jak made one outstanding save near the end, but had little to do. His distribution was quite good though.

It's not saying much about Asley's youth policy of 'buying in some of the best young talent around'

I hadn't seen Aarons before, but my impression was hat they guy obviously has a lot of skill but needs to learn to pass and play in a team. Cracking goal, and he did have a couple of very good passes, but far more often he ran into dead ends I thought.

I couldn't beleve it when Obi told me it was Mbabu's 18th yesterday. He looks so strong and intelligent. His tackles were well times and calm all over the pitch, and he showed good vision going forward. I'm excited about his prospects for us.

Yeah Kevin really impressed, probably the most composed player on the pitch, and looked a cut above the rest!
