Leicester City have turned to former England international David Nugent as they begin to widen their search for a new striker.
City have missed out on Marlon King, and a deal to bring Yakubu to the Walkers Stadium is in deadlock over personal terms.

'Deadlock of personal terms' - so the Yak saying he loved his time at Leicester and wants to stay still comes at a price which we cannot afford...can anyone say DJ Campbell?

We are getting mixed messages on the Yak. Stringer says everything is done our end and we are waiting for Everton to close up their end and by the sounds of thinks they want this deal to go through asap. Now the mercury seems to think we are no closer to an agreement with Yakubu. I would have both Nugent and the Yak along with Diomansy Kamara. We would have to forget Heskey for now because the wage bill would be too high so we might as well keep Steve Howard as he is a cheaper option and probaly more content with a bit part player

hmmmm.

Yes the rumours seem to be of a wide range. I do think we will sign Yakubu though, maybe next week as Stringer said. Nugent's a good goalscorer at this level and I wouldn't turn my nose up at him.

If we are looking to sign him though I'd suggest quite a few of the other deals have fallen through - I'm thinking Heskey, Maynard and possibly Kamara.

I'd take Nugent - proven goalscorer at this level, just what we need <ok>

As for the Yak, I suspect we're offering him somewhere around £30k a week and he wants closer to his original £50k wage at Everton. I do believe, however, that there will be agreement and we will sign. Agree about the mixed messages though; Stringer, Marlow and Tanner all seem to have different scripts at the moment!

Out of all of them i would believe Stringer as he is always on the ball and 9 times out of 10 what he says happens. Last season he got nearly all the rumours and information right. Plus the nationals seem to think its a done deal

I think we are going to have to get used to people saying things like that. Nothing anybody writes has any real credibility anymore (apart from us lot on here of course ;) )

We only signed 3 players last season that cost money. Moreno and Bamba was cheap as chips and Waghorn cost 2-3M. Sven has only signed Vassell and Bamba so he hasnt spent money on transfer fees but the wage bill would be high under Sven

The Yak and the Nugget up front - sounds powerful! Can we play 4-4-2 though...all this 4-3-3 is bollocks as we always play 4-5-1 in reality. Also I'm too spasticated to really get to grips with any other formation.

I'd certainly take Nugnet, as said above a proven goalscorer at this level and I think we need more players who have proven to be capable of playing at this level because I think it was a culture shock to some of the loanees who came in from reserve football and thought this would be the same.

Also, do you think it will be Yak AND Nugent or is Nugent being lined up as an alternative. Or, it could just be a rumour put out by Leicester to show Yak that he's not invaluable to us and to encourage him to sign on our terms.

And Burmese, I think the reason Sven likes 4-3-3 is because you have more bodies in midfield and so can dominate that area and be more fruitful with possesion. Also, if you get support from wide and from midfield then the isolation of the striker shouldn't be an issue.

Not sure i fancy Nugent. His record is 1 goal every 4 games. May be an impact player off the bench but it's not exciting me. messages on the pompey board seem quite prepared to let him go

David Nugent - 26 years old

2002–2005 Bury 88 (18)
2005–2007 Preston North End 94 (33)
2007– Portsmouth 78 (16)
2009–2010 → Burnley (loan) 30 (6)

2005–2007 England U21 14 (4)
2007 England 1 (1)

Good English championship striker, still has his best to come, he could be on the verge of another England call up after scoring 25 in 40 games for us next season!

I must say I've never looked up his statistics. Then again he was fancied by many a Prem side 4 years ago until they realised he couldn't cut it at that level, so he definitely impressed for Preston. In fact I remember him being raved about at the time.

I'm surprised Portsmouth would want him gone - they are skint and he scored a fair amount for them last season did he not?

Think thats why they want him gone. They dont have a lot of money and want his wages off their books

mmmm, but last year we looked clueless at times in the final third. Our approach play would be superb and then we stopped running and passed the ball sideways whilst the opposition got back in numbers and broke us down. We lacked penetration and the killer instinct that stikers require. It was a case of players not realising they could actually shoot from midfield. Also with a 5 man midfield and a 4 man defence we leaked goals like a teabag. Its still 4-4-2 for me.

Agree with your criticisms of Leicester last season but was it caused by the formation?

Also, if we play 4-4-2, are Wellens and King robust enough and if not, who do you leave out for a new signing?

I meant Portsmouth fans don't want him and say he's overrated.
