SOUL STIRRING crowned Champion 3yo Filly In Japan. Also confirmed that she stays in training and will be targeted at Royal Ascot and Breeders Cup.
In early December the Thoroughbred Daily News printed a table of the leading Global Second Season Sires. Now that's the sires who had their first 2yo crop in 2016 and their 2nd in 2017. So these 2nd season sires are jusdged on their first crop's 3yo performance and their 2nd crop's 2yo performances. I list now the top UK/Ire sires and their global positions (a different way to thay way we normally look at some of these sires):- 1. Frankel (1st globally) 2. Nathaniel (2nd) 3. Helmet (10th) 4. Excelebration (16th) 5. Sir Prancelot (19th) 6. Bated Breath (24th) 7. Mayson (25th) 8. Casamento (26th) 9. Harbour watch (27th) 10.Foxwedge (30th) http://www.thoroughbreddailynews.co...ires&utm_campaign=Sire Lists&utm_medium=email Observations:- A magnificent performance by Frankel to be the leading 2nd season sire globally Similar excellent performances from Nathaniel and Helmet to be in the top 10 of global 2nd season sires Hasn't the bargain basement sire Sir Prancelot done well to not only be the leading UK/Ire 1st Season sire in 2016 but also to finish 5th in the same list in 2017 and 19th globally. Horses rated 6-10 are a surprise to me. Are they a surprise to you? Frankel's top position is skewed by the winnings of Soul stirring and Cracksman (actually his highest earner). Nathaniel's 2nd position is skewed by the winnings of Enable All top sires earnings are skewed by the results of top horses: that's why they are top sires. Comments:- For the UK to have the top 2 is a fantastic performance, and whatever way one looks at it that cannot be denied. Nor can you knock the achievement of any of the top 10 sires. The finances of breeding are illuminating. Let's look at the top 2 sires. Frankel's earnings in 2017 were $7.9 million and Nathaniel's earnings were $6.8m. If you look at the winning per actual starters in the year then you find Frankel's starters won an average of $64k while Nathaniel's won $51k. So how should we view this when Frankel's fee was £125k while Nathaniel's fee was £17k. Frankel's starters in 2017 cost $15.4m, while Nathaniel's starters cost $2.4million. If Frankel's mares had been covered by Nathaniel and vice-versa would the result have changed round? What causes this slightly strange financial position, and justifies it, is that Frankel has produced a horse, Cracksman, that, all being well, will be queued up to be a top sire in the future. Nathaniel does not have that. There is plenty of time for things to change in the future.
FRANKINCENCE was 6th on debut finishing strongly but too much to do. Probably needs further. SIGNALIZE was disappointing running 4th in her prep run for the Japanese 1000 Guineas. TOP DECK and IMMORTALISED are set to run later today in Abu Dhabi.
Winter Lightning won a 1000gns trial at Meydan, she was previously beaten 5 lengths by none other than Veracious hopefully that bodes well. If you want to watch that race you can here, https://www.sportinglife.com/racing...rters-orders-maiden-fillies'-stakes-(plus-10) You will have to register though.
Thanks chaos. The race can also be watched here http://www.dubairacingclub.com/media/videos/videos (along with other Meydan races). If full screen isn't available the videos may be watched via Youtube
Ah. Sorry, misunderstood. Did you know that a lot of videos are shown on the Jockey Club site (inc Veracious) here
Apologies for the radio silence, Life is rather busy with two small people to look after and returning to work! Nice to see SOLO SAXOPHONE make it 2 from 2 over hurdles this afternoon! Also news that CRACKSMAN may be out earlier than anticipated having been given an entry in the Dubai Sheena Classic at the end of March. It had been expected that he would make his seasonal debut at Royal Ascot.
Solo Saxophone still finding his feet but jumped a little better this time almost a carbon copy finish to his last race. Cracksman must be showing signs that he's working well if they are thinking of sending him to Dubai. JG won it last year with Jack Hobbs, would be great to see him again, June seems a long way off.
John Gosden was quoted as saying that he’s doing so well (bucking and rearing on the gallops) he could run him next week “at Newcastle”. His targets for the season are the King George and the Arc, everything else is fluid and will depend on how he is doing. In talking about the European 2 year old rankings, handicapper Graham Smith picked out WITHOUT PAROLE (a Frankel half-brother to BC Dirt Mile winner Tamarkuz) as a dark horse for this season. He won his only start by 6 lengths in December and the handicapper said he could see him shaping up into a Guineas horse.
Irish Handicapper puts up CONTINGENT as “one to watch” for 2018. A winner of her only start over a mile at Leopardstown last October, she’s quoted at 25/1 for the Oaks.
A few entries: Sunday ZEFFERINO in a 1m Handicap at Kempton Saturday 24th Feb FRANKUUS in the G3 Winter Derby at Lingfield
This was Teddy Grimthorpe talking about Herculean. While plans remain fluid for Expert Eye, the Roger Charlton-trained Herculean, who is also owned by Abdullah, is likely to have a run before a potential outing in the Guineas. The son of Frankel, who is a general 25-1 shot, has not been seen since making a winning debut at Ascot in September. Grimthorpe added: "Roger has given him time, but he has furnished well over the winter. He is a big, striking horse. If he is going to be a Guineas horse, he is going to need to go to a prep race, but again it is not carved in stone. "It was not ground that kept him from coming out again, he was still quite a raw horse that was not fully furnished. I was beginning to wonder about him but happy to see all is well.
Liked the look of this Colt first time out but not surprised he's not been out since simply because of his size. If he grows into himself this season he is going to be a pleasure to watch. However there's a bit of me that wonders if he will take a little longer (last time I saw a Colt that size he was 4 before he grew into himself)
Im on Contingent for the Oaks 25/1, Veracious for the 1000 at 25/1, Elarqam for the 2000 at 16/1 and Nelson for the Derby at 33/1. Nelson is out of Oaks 2nd and Irish Oaks winner Moonstone, a half brother to Derby 2nd US Army Ranger, and is going to improve for the trip next season, he already has top form with Roaring Lion which puts him there with Saxon Warrior, who is not a certain stayer, and the way he stayed on that day showed he needed a trip already. I think he is an astonishing price at 33/1 with Paddy.
