Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill has said she will attempt to block any plans to use "fracking" on land owned by her department. Fracking is a controversial method of extracting gas from shale rock. Australian mining company Tambornan has been granted a licence to explore for gas in the border counties of Fermanagh and Leitrim. The licence area covers thousands of acres of forestry land owned by the Department of Agriculture. If approval is sought to extract the gas using hydraulic fracturing or fracking, the minister said her department would have to be consulted. In a letter to her party colleague, assembly member Phil Flanagan, Mrs O'Neill said she would not agree to fracking taking place on land owned by the department. She said she was both "personally and politically concerned" about the process and any potential impact it could have on the environment. -------------------------------- Don't really know the ins and outs of Fracking, why are people so against it?
Ciaran, There has been a huge scare in Americaa where water supplies have become polluted due to the corrosion inhibitors and various other chemicals to prevent fouling and corrosion pumped down the wells. Lot's of people have become very ill in the US.l
It might frack up the environment, and leave a fracking mess. Also, fracking would tend to happen the countryside, where most politicians live.
Hang on a minute, just on land owned by her department. So anywhere else is okay. Sounds like another Fatty Salmond and "not in my back yard".
This is quite right. If it could be carried out on some **** hole council estate it wouldn't be on the radar. It creates a big mess uses **** loads of water and for the amount of gas that can actually be extracted is only economically viable while gas prices are high.
Yup there is evidence which as usual the government are attempting to cover up as they don't want to piss off the major Oil and Gas companies. Ever seen Erin Brockovitch, similar type scenario which was covered up. And I'd pump Julia as well most likely.
I dunno, people just like to oppose everything that involves a big energy company, nuclear power - not in my back yard, wind farms - ruin my costal view, coal power plants - too much carbon... energy bill rises - well that's just out of order! Plus a couple of decades ago everyone was bitching about mines, now we have a load of big man made lakes where wildlife is flourishing.
The United Kingdom Of Britain and The Irish Isles are teeming with onshore gas in the shale rock. This could put an end to unsightly wind farms on land. But we have to think of the children and be careful that we don't go down the US route of law suits and stuff.
What I meant was: Isn't there a town with a massive gas deposit underneath it? One that would require the town being dug up to gain access to it.
Well yes you are correct. It would be a small sacrifice to get rid of a ****hole in Fife that is full of in-bred mutants. We must embrace technology. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, the end justifies the means and all that.
I don't agree with fracking. However, Genocide of the Fifers I do agree with. You should take out an ad in nexus, outlining your various plans for advancing scotland
Might be a bit late to get out of this one. The 2013 draft EU-Canada trade treaty includes language outlawing 'any breach of legitimate expectations of investors' which may occur if revoking drilling licences of Canada-registered companies in the territory of the European Union after the treaty comes into force. So they get their money one way or the other.
That's right, Ashes To Ashes I believe. The Pet Shop Boys as well in 86. "We're F-R-A-C-K-I-N-G, we're fracking"
