QPR’s survival bid stirs with four goal West Brom salvo – report Sunday, 5th Apr 2015 23:33 by Clive Whittingham Just when all seemed lost, QPR surged back into contention to stay in the Premier League with a 4-1 win at West Brom on Easter Saturday. Hope rekindled, or agony prolonged? The beleaguered supporters of Queens Park Rangers, who must be wondering what on earth their mentally unstable football team will serve up next, will have a better idea which it is after Tuesday night’s crucial match at relegation rivals Aston Villa. The complexion and significance of that game has shifted markedly after Saturday’s remarkable, nonsensical rout of West Bromwich Albion. The storyline for the Easter period seemed set: two defeats on the road against teams that have both been below Rangers at one time or another this season but have since been revitalised by managers QPR could have appointed, but didn’t, hammering the final nail into the London side’s Premier League coffin. QPR arrived at The Hawthorns adrift in the bottom three, on a run of five straight defeats and ten losses in 11 games. They’d won only one of their 15 away matches in all competitions this season, and lost the other 14 scoring only eight goals in the process. But they hadn’t read the script here. As an author, Mr Whittingham makes an honest attempt to engage with his audience initially but unfortunately it soon gives way to long-winded hyperbolic self interest. It is true he has a good turn of phrase and an array of quirky idioms in his armory but its all too forced, like the boy in school who just wants to be liked by all. He quickly gets gobbled up in his own fantasy and just will not let up until long after the casual reader has given up or fallen asleep. The sheer protractedness of his articles seems to betray a man desperately trying to find somewhere/someone to belong to and perhaps even a small hint of a mild psychotic condition. In my considered opinion, Mr Whittingham is in need of a comprehensive review of his writing style and also the services of a competent editor (with counselling skills if possible) to get his essays into some form of usable shape (and size) fit for the general footballing readership.
I Like Clives write ups, but comparing West Brom's long ball to the bombing of Dresden is a bit of a stretch.
I respect his contribution, it is a fans eye report with all the frustration being an R brings. No one's perfect. 9's You're a bad man
Unfortunately, if like Swords, you have the attention-span of a gnat, Clive's writing style might not be suitable...
If you want a 100 word snippet, read The Daily Star. If you want a proper article displaying the passion of a long-suffering home and away supporter and the eloquence of a professional journalist, read LFW.
Exactly right. I look out for Clive's report every week: a feast of analysis, eloquence, angst and passion.
Rodney don't be such a plonker Our Mods recognised that people were getting peed off with repetitive, one-liner, mindless ad hominems every week and requested more constructive criticism. I've done that Rodney so wot more do you want from a bloke??? Jeez
I see what you've done there Swords...so clever...self irony the height of intellectual humour!!! I am so impressed...Clive has nowt on you!
I enjoyed that report, particularly the description of the rehearsed move for the 2nd goal. He was also right about Isla letting Brunt get too many crosses in, although Phillips, who continues to impress going forward, could have helped more in that regard too.
