Most of us are resigned to being in the Championship next season, who are the players from our current squad you'd like to see forming the basis of a side that will be competitive?

I'd take Cesar, Nelsen, Hill, Traore, M'Bia, Diakite, Faurlin, Derry, Mackie, Hoilett, Taarabt, Zamora.

Some are right at the end of their careers but have the attitude that we need and know the league, add some younger, hungry players and we may have a chance. Adel would be a key player but would he stay?...

Depends on whether Harry stays, I think he'd be able to persaude him...

If we go down (which I'm not resigned to yet) then we'd need to completely gut the squad.

Of the players listed, only the oldies would be likely to stay but one or two may retire (and would struggle with 46 game seasons). The others would need to be sold due to their wages and personal ambitions (even Mackie falls into this category).

All or nothing I'm afraid so hope for the best and plan for the worst.

It's all very well saying players need to be sold, if they are on such big wages that no sane PL club will have them we'll be stuck with them. The ones I've listed are the ones who I think would be good for us at Championship level. It won't be easy down there, just look at Bolton, Blackburn and Wolves...

Yeh, pointless thread - we are only 6 points off safety and have a good chance of staying up if everyone performs near their best, and that includes Supporters. We have everything to play for. It is absoultely pointless to play realising your nightmares, until we are actually relegated.

    Foundations for next season?

I can think of four or five players that should form part of the foundations of the new stadium. 10m of fresh concrete could get them off the wage bill.

Doesn't even bear thinking. The majority of our squad fall into the 'too old' or the 'couldn't give a sh** in the lower league' basket. I'd try to form a team around Green, Faurlin and Mackie but are they even good enough? Keeping Mbia would be a big big plus.

I'm not sure it's a pointless question, I think it has relevance on the January Transfer window. ie

Come January would you rather see HR buy players in an all-out attempt to keep us up or players who are going to stay with us next year which ever league we are in?

I’d rather see us buying players for the long run not purchasing\loaning short term mercenary style players in a hope to stay up. Don’t get me wrong I want to see us fighting to stay up but I’m really fed up of the journey man style players. I don’t want us to see the same excuses next year, “they need time” “they haven’t gel’d” etc. etc. So let’s look in January to the future and not the short term and who knows we may just stay up but if we don’t we’ll have a good basis for our team next year as well.

Maybe a negative outlook but just how I feel at the moment, couple of wins may brighten me up though.

Perfectly reasonable thread imho - no harm in those on this board hoping for the best, but thinking ahead to a quite possible future.

Those I'd choose and may want to stay - Mackie, Faurlin - And Nelsen, Hill, Derry sure, on the basis that we also have an influx of younger players

The others I'd take but if their hearts aren't in it and we get reasonable offers, I think they'll go

If we can establish a decent 'spine' in the team from January, even if we go down we'll have a platform to hit the ground running. A quality centreback and striker would be a start. Cesar and M'Bia would be the two to complete that spine and we go on from there. One or two younger additions would give us a good blend of youth and experience. If Harry goes simply for experience and we don't stay up we could really be in the sh*t...

Players brought in to the Club in January with the target of keeping us in the PL will be mainly on Loan for the rest of the saeson only. I think Harry has said this.
