Remember Alf Wood playing centre half once in the 70's far better than he did upfront, like wise Nick Deacy. Also on the reverse Ian Dobson played upfront a few games and scored as did Paul Haigh, anyone remember others
Not for us obviously, but Dion Dublin and Chris Sutton. You could argue Kamil Zayatte was a striker playing at the back given how clinical his finishing was for us at times.
it was the other way round with peter swan. the one that i could never understand was nicky brown. scored a million goals as a teenager and when he made the first eleven he played as full back. i finally guessed that his teenage goalscoring must have down to a growth spurt at age 10 that made him a foot taller than all the other kids who caught up ten years later thereby stopping his goal scoring exploits.
didn't Batistuta play centre half for fiorentina quite a phew times. BUt what would you expect from a guy that looks like Jesus
Andy Mason...signed by Terry D from Bolton where he'd been their reserves' top scorer. After about ten games and one goal got put centre back in a five man defence with two defensive midfielders protecting them. I seem to remember one game him getting brought on as a sub, only to be replaced later in the game by Alan Fettis when we were going through a phase of playing him as an outfield player!
He did, defo. He was shifted up front in 'an emergency' and - quel surprise - he started banging them in and the fans responded with the marvellous 'Knees up Nicky Brown' chant. Paul Warhurst was a good shout, he made the england squad as a striker so good was his form.
Kenny Burns. Illustrated the genius of Cloughie. Signed an inconsistent, tempermental striker to play at Centre back, made him captain. He became an integral part of that succesful Forest era, winning league titles, two european cups etc.
Not quite the same but I remember Terry Dolan chucking big Bobby Dewhurst upfront on many occasion when we were 1 down with 5 to play. Feel obliged to mention Alan Fettis and his striking exploits also...
i think Dele Adebola could be converted into a make shift centre half IF the need arose. off topic. BUT i remember SuperMac Malcolm MacDonald who started out at LUTON TOWN as a centre half (early 70's) but due to an emergency was played up top. The rest as they say is history. Big Money moves to Newcastle Utd and Arsenal followed.
