Forum usage analysis

Nass, I'm not criticising the "community" or individuals, but I do feel that , if you take away 'tipping' and the odd protracted debate originated about a particular horse or race, then the forum doesn't have a lot left.
I also believe that the site has become 'cliquish,' and these are the reasons why there are only a small number of members who actively participate on an ongoing basis.
I'd be interested to know what others think.

Interesting how people see things differently, I see this site far less 'cliquey' than the old 606 site.
The Daily Thread is an interesting one, on the beeb there would be 200 posts a day many about what people were having for lunch and a host of other rubbish, like Ron it felt like that was the place for an elite group of individuals who weren't looking for the views of others, so I also steered well clear of it.
On this site the Daily Thread barely gets 20 posts but this may be because there's a greater range of other threads where people can and do post their views - the old beeb board would see little activity outside of the Daily Thread, it's actually the reverse here.
I much prefer the 'feel' about this place...

I also noticed SB that there is just about always a guest or two about the place. I wonder how many guests make an appearance per week?

Going back to the old days of 6-0-6 I think that place never really recovered from FF, Stick and Arkle all leaving, for one reason or another, in such a short space of time. Whatever your opinions on them they were undoubtedly the 3 strongest ‘personalities and characters’ and the place never really recovered from their loss.

I’m quite shocked by that total of 77. Would have thought it was considerably higher. Is everyone from the old 6-0-6 aware of this place?!? I think though that those 77 do, in the main, provide insightful and interesting analysis on the racing scene and I certainly enjoy my time on here. Although I do agree totally with the earlier stated condemnation re the ‘I’ve picked a winner aren’t I brilliant brigade’! Makes me laugh and this sort of behaviour should only exist if the people concerned also flag up their many losers!

I think a lot of people look forward to my selections as it provides some reassurance if they have backed something else in the race.

But seriously - I can see two sides here. There are times when it DOES seem a bit of a private club into which you have accidentally blundered. And nothing does more to emphasize this than having no-one comment on your comments, if you see what I mean.

It's a point of contention about the whereabouts of previously regular contributors. Of the myriad of alternatives that sprang up, this seems by far the best - at least for horse racing. The 606v2 site's racing section is almost defunct, JA606 likewise (although their football section is VERY well attended), and last time I looked in on 'fugees it seemed like a ghost town. So just where are the old 606ers going? Retired?

Reebok - I think this site picked up the majority of the old 606ers, I use 606V2 for NFL and the racing board there barely gets a post a day so they're not over there.

Interesting comment on Rons thread to the 'voyeurs', someone said they don't have as much knowledge as others so don't feel they can contribute too much. Maybe this can be translated to them being too intimidated by people with greater knowledge or fear of being ridiculed, on this site I've never known anyone be ridiculed if their knowledge is less than others but we may want to bear that in mind if/when these people start posting....

I'm still around but due to moving offices I have lost my corner seat where no one could see what I'm up to!! I'm now out in the open so have to limit my internet usuage a bit so didnt really get to come on as much anymore.

As a new user of this site - I only first stumbled across it at the start of this month, I think I might have something worth saying here. (Incidentaly I was aware of the old 606 but never used it).

To be fair, this is a Horse Racing forum - if you take away the tipping and the fairly significant debates about particular races or horses, then what should it have left? There is a general chat forum no (not that I've looked at it much...)?

Personally, I haven't found this site particularly cliquish at all - I quickly realised there were a few regularly contributors floating around, but I wouldn't say that it's cliquish at all. Certainly I haven't felt like I don't want to voice my opinion at all.

Also, I don't really use the Daily Thread because to be honest, I'm more interested in the few high class horse races than the great depths of the lower level form which can be seen 5 meetings a day - and this lends itself much more to the general discussion than the Daily Thread, I think.

Sir Barney: Well, to each his own of course, but I must say (and I am not being facetious) that you are most certainly one of the most tolerant members ever on both the old 606 forum and this one too.

(I loved the piece about Brown Jack, though. I can't recall who wrote it but I was motivated to buy the biography of the horse, which I had somehow lost years ago. So thanks for that).

Thanks for that BD. Could you give some idea of why it doesn't appeal and maybe what might make it more appealing. Don't be afraid to use other forums as examples, if appropriate.

I'm sorry but I don't feel criticism is appropriate.

The forum works for those for whom it was initially set up - clearly most of you got acquainted on the 606 racing forum and when that site went tits up you quite naturally wanted another place to air your views and discuss matters pertaining to horse racing.

It just doesn't work for me, and I feel it would be churlish to question the status quo.

Just a couple of observations, though. I've noticed people wondering where some former 606 racing forum enthusiasts might have gone. If 606 racing carried a lot of traffic then such members may now be on another site that is busier than this one. Where that might be I simply cannot say.

Also, as a reader of various articles on here but not a great contributor, I'd like to see the authors credit their sources. If they included a bibliography as a footnote it might help those who wish to read further into the subject matter. That's just a suggestion, and it should certainly not be construed as a critical one.
