David Moyes likely to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson - Tommy Docherty

BBC Sport Former Manchester United manager Tommy Docherty believes Sir Alex Ferguson will be allowed to choose his own successor and is likely to select Everton boss David Moyes.

"Fergie will make the appointment of whoever takes his place, not the directors," Docherty told BBC Sport.

"I think it will be David Moyes because they are good friends. He's done a great job at Everton with no money."

Ferguson said in February he wanted to continue for "two or three more years".

Docherty, who managed United between 1972 and 1977, says replacing a man who has won 12 league titles and two European Cups in 25 years at Old Trafford is "an impossible task".

But he believes Moyes, who on a shoestring budget has led Everton to four top-six finishes in 10 years, has the attributes to take on the challenge.

"If I was a gambling man I would say David Moyes," said Docherty. "He's an ex-player, but not a great player, just as Sir Alex wasn't a great player, but their records as managers are fantastic.

"Alec will probably move upstairs, but he will want a new manager who knows how the game is played, how the club should be run and keep in contact with him about what's going on."

Ferguson almost retired in 2002 but changed his mind, and Docherty believes the 70-year-old could well go on beyond the three years he mentioned in an exclusive interview with BBC Radio 5 live Sport.

"I think he will carry on managing Manchester United as long as keeps his enthusiasm and his health," said Docherty.

"If he does that that there's no reason he can't carry on for I don't know how long."

The bit that got me when i was watching the video was he said our manager would move upstairs, i don't think he will in my opinion, if its David Moyes or someone else, i don't think he'll interrupt the new manager.

Whether Fergie moves upstairs or not, he should not be allowed to intervene in the manager's business, I think Fergie undestands it himself too, if someone started giving him orders he wouldn't take it and rightly so. The manager should be the sole man in charge of football affairs, whoever succeeds SAF has to allowed to do his job. And I don't think it will be completely Fergie's call. He will have a big input that's for certain but so will the directors, and I don't think SAF being friends with DM will have much to do with it. That said Moyes wouldn't be a bad choice, plays decent football, has done a good job for several years, shrewd in the transfer market with limited funds and is a firm proponent of discipline and professionalism. The only worry is his lack of trophies but overall I think he'd do a decent job

He's friends with Jose Mourinho, it doesn't mean he's going to be our next manager, i think it will be a surprise name that becomes our new manager.

No matter what anyone says I believe there is already an agreement for Mourinho to take over after Fergie.

I like Moyes but just cant see him as the next United manager, maybe in the future but not just now. Would like to see him have a crack at the CL. Maybe Spurs will get him next and he will get the chance.

Possibly, Mourinho never sticks around for very long so it could be Moyes has it in a couple of years. I just think the long term manager situation suits United and so for that reason it should be Moyes straight away with no interim, as interesting as Jose would be. The CL experience is just something he'll have to get quickly, I'd rather him with no experience than someone like Benitez who has!

I don't think the Spurs job is there now anyway, Redknap is likely to stick around as the Spurs job is as high as he will ever get. Then again, if he carries on like the last month or so he'll be sacked soon enough.

I think there's a good chance Mourinho could actually stay a while if he was appointed. If you look at his career it's not like he's changing clubs for the sake of it. At Porto he had achieved everything he could, needed another challenge. At Chelsea who knows he could still be in charge today if Roman had not quite ridiculously sacked him. Inter was always going to be a stop gap and the fans there treated him like dirt, he proved them wrong and then left. And he doesn't seem to be in a hurry to leave Real. I like Moyes a lot but Mourinho wouldn't be a bad option, he has been a huge success everywhere he has been. The downside is that his record at developing players is fairly poor and he spends a lot of money, but I think that if there are good enough youngsters knocking on the door he's too smart not to ignore them, and he'll inherit a good squad so he doesn't need to spend fortunes. And the board should make sure the spending remains reasonable, that's their job

What about Guardiola after his sabbatical - great football, great attacking style and can obviously work with a dressing room full of ego and talent.

His job wasnt the toughest job in football. He had a team of players who really didnt need telling what to do most of the time and when they did they had no help from Pep at all. He had no plan B, nothing for that 'what if' situation.

His football was great but very one dimensional and imo exclusive to that Barcelona side.

I agree to a point, however, it does seem that his natural instinct is to play a very similar style of football to our own, in complete contrast to the more cautious style of Mourinho's teams.

I would like to see him at another club first, one a million miles from Barcelona. Where his abilities will be tested. I am not convinced he would cope. Coaches like Mourinho are very rare, hes the guy we should get, money has helped him yes but hes done if everywhere hes gone, different leagues, different challenges. Hes the most proven coach after Fergie in the world. Just keeps on winning.

If United were in the entertainment business like Hulk Hogan and co then sure, go for Pep. The thing is we are in the results business.

Mourinho has got his sides playing some nice stuff at times, its his willingness to fight for it when he might not of deserved it that puts him on Fergies level. I mean Porto* 2004 and Inter 2010. Thats insane, twice.

    * cheating bastards might I add :D

Why do you keep posting on threads over a year old and liking your own comments?
