Yeah, on a serious note corporal punishment was still in effect when I was at Primary school. My last PS Headmaster (who also took our class) used to cane or back hand you with rings on a whim, he was an evil sod who didn't even hide his pleasure at the power he had over 8-11 year old children. He'd make you stand beside him in front of the class, draw out what you did over long agonising moments, wait in silence then hit you after what seemed like forever. Loved telling me I was no good English sounding liar who had fooled incompetent English teachers into believing I was smart but he knew better. Best thing I ever saw was when a kid a year older than me flipped when he cuffed him and turned and punched him in the jaw, knocked him on his back. He got a hiding for his troubles but he thought it was worth it. My revenge was more subtle. When I was 17 at our high school had an academic awards event and so as a prefect so receiving an award but helping with the organisation. He was now a politician and a guest, my now vice principal introduced him to me with "ah one of your success stories here I believe" my response was. I'm from NI but lived in England between the ages of 3-8, returned to NI and this man's wonderful charms...so "English" meant nationally not the class lol. His idea of teaching was reading the entire newspaper out loud to us each morning then getting us to do decade out of date 11+ manuals in the afternoon, sometimes he didn't come back after lunch, sometimes he did. The slapping was for not getting enough right on those manuals. Luckily he retired with a year to go and we managed to get caught up enough to pass the 11+ No thanks to him though, dead now I believe.
