http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/bluebirds-eye-view-forget-rest-7814455 WOL's Sian Matheson - But the club must now move forward and acquire some stability. No disrespect to the likes of Dundeeâs Paul Hartley and the now favourite for the job, Leyton Orientâs Russell Slade, but I canât help but wonder, is this really the time to appoint someone who has never managed at Championship level?
In simple answer to your question: "no." I don't recall Slade being in line for any other high profile jobs. City is a high profile job. Has Slade ever worked with a squad like this? These are not local youngsters and journeymen professionals like at Orient but highly paid players with top league experience and at international level. Cardiff is a premier league club waiting to happen again. it needs a manager able to cope with the pressures of this expectation, and also handle a Chairman who runs the club with an iron fist. Appointing Slade would be a disaster.
Only time would tell whether it would be a disaster or not. However, it seems insane, given what's happened over the peat nine months or so, for us even consider going to someone who's not done the business of getting a club promoted into the premiership or who has managed to keep a struggling team up. However, sadly, I just don't think Pulis is going to be our man.
No offence to the guy, but I'd never heard of him before he was touted for this job. Seems unreal that Tan & Co would even consider him for this level. As an aside, some money going on Brian McDermott at the moment - I'd prefer him.
Nin - everything is relative. At least McDermott took us to the cleaners when he was at Reading - I can still remember that playoff farce.
Guys, just curious, who do you actually want? Tried a name in OGS and that didnt work, MM did appear to be working for you but his obvious issues with VT didnt help him you or the club. Just because Slad hasnt managed at the top doesnt mean he isnt capable of putting together a promotion push with you. He has been there 4 years and was one game away last season from playing at the same level you are now. I can see why he wouldnt be many peoples choice, but do you want someone (Macdermott who has managed at this level and failed. Sometimes it the ones you least expect that work the magic. So I suppose basically I can see who you don't want but who would your choice be ? ( there arent to many options out there without having to pay comp)
Pulis must be the number 1 choice............ .......but if not (and don't laugh), I'd definitely welcome Brian McDermott to pull this lot together.
It seems that Tan is taking advice from Glen Roeder and the decision to opt for Slade came from him. A very strange decision indeed given Roeder's managerial credentials. The overwhelming fans favourite appears to be Pulis but that is not going to happen. Steve Clark is a good shout but equally unlikely given Roeder's influence. Roeder's input aside, a name not mentioned by anyone is Brian McDermot an ex City player, a man who gained promotion with Reading and also has experience of managing a basket case club. Whatever anyone thinks he would in my book be infinitely preferable to Slade who has not won a thing in his managerial career. Why Tan is messing about with an advisor with such limited credentials is yet further confirmation that the Board knows very little about football and seem intent on driving the club deeper and deeper into the mire.
Apologies. Wrote that in a bar in not so sunny but very warm Spain while sheltering from the rain and on a dodgy internet connection. I hadn't seen your earlier post and still can't but only a couple of threads are viewable my end.
No probs whoops - like me, you appear to think our ex-player McDermott could do a job for us right now. Apart from Pulis, he'd be the one for me. His players respect him wherever he's been. He's organised and could put something decent together out of the shambles that Ole has left behind. Nobody at the club has come out of this "Ole era" with any credit - particularly Dalman who seems to have been the main driver behind his appointment last January.
You have to admire the boards ambition when they appointed Ole. I can see where they were coming from with regard to the up and coming manager bit. His record in Norway wasn't brilliant but it wasn't bad. Now they want to appoint someone, as they see it, to steady the ship and want a calming figure. Forget the rhetoric about a new, exciting, young manager for the moment. However, Russell Slade, in my humble opinion, would be a stop gap for someone they have already run the rule over but for whatever reason can't bring in just yet. It's the only logical reason I can think of for them approaching Slade. As for Glenn Roeder, WTF! Is Hamman pulling strings or something?
Taff - I suppose you could say that Ole was a gamble that just didn't pay off, but he was the wrong guy at the wrong time. Brief success in a tinpot Norwegian league was never a CV for someone to save the club from the drop in the Premier League last year, though I also suppose it's all very well with the benefit of hindsight. If it had come off, the City Board led by Tan/Dalman would have been hailed as visionary. As it is, he's also been found wanting (to say the least) even in this second tier we find ourselves in. He has assembled a bloated squad based up on principles that don't stack up in this competitve division. This is a pile of s**t that needs sorting this season not in the future. The City decision makers need to grasp the nettle, especially after what Dalman said in the recent meeting with the supporters trust. I'll paste it below and I didn't like the last sentence one bit....... "Ken Choo introduced himself to us. Heâs an accountant by profession, is Vincent Tanâs personal appointment and said he had full executive powers at the club. Ken talked us through the present financial situation. Our income this season will drop from £80m to £40m and there have been and will be cuts to the budget and like all clubs we must adhere to the financial fair play rules. We are likely to see more players go out on loan so that the wage bill is kept under control. Mehmet Dalman added that things look ok for this season but that if do not get promoted then the club will be in serious financial difficulty."
