Hi Cyc.

My brother-in-law and his wife have just come back from a holiday in Australia and weren't too impressed.

Obviously we couldn't understand and asked why.

They went to Sydney and the Barrier Reef but didn't have much luck. They couldn't go into the sea because of the sharks and jelly fish and they weren't allowed on the beaches because of the crocodiles (apparently notices up all over the place "Beware of the crocodiles".

So they went back to their apartment only to find a frog there which apparently was a poisonous frog.

Faced with the prospect of death by shark, jelly fish, crocodile or frog, I think they decided not to return in a hurry.

What is going on? About 10 years ago my son went to Australia (most places, including Sydney, Melbourne, Cook Islands, Fiji, driving across deserts, Red Rock etc and he loved it and would go back at the drop of a hat (and a few grand).
 
Thank goodness I'm not going near the ocean when I go down under (4 weeks tomorrow). Apparently the folks live about 10 mins from Albury racecourse
 
Just did a little bit of homework Ron. :)

Since 1791 there have been 877 shark attacks, of those 216 died.

On average, 1 person per year in Australia is killed by crock.

Box Jellyfish have killed 2 in the last decade.

By contrast, 1292 people lost their lives on roads in 2011.

I think it's just a matter of being sensible when it comes to the environment and the beasties that live in it.

P.S. You forgot the snakes.

According to the LD50 test, Australia has the top 11, most venomous snakes on the planet, and 20 of the top 25.

We won't get into the spiders. <laugh>
 
It's bl**dy expensive. If you go, Janabelle, stock up with everyday things like aspirin, sun tan lotion ,shaving cream: it costs an arm and a leg out there.
I struggle to understand how half the people live, BUT THEN from the size of HALF OF them IT LOOKS LIKE mostly in Macdonalds.

HAVING SAID THAT, IT'S A BRILLIANT PLACE.
 
While on sunscreen, Melanoma is Australia's national cancer. They make up only 2.3 percent of all skin cancers, but account for 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths. One in less than 20 Australians will suffer a melanoma at some stage of their lives.

I't not my first visit Cyc - think I am almost in double digits! Used to be a reasonable place to go when the exchange rate was $2.5 to £1, now you are doing well if you can get $1.5 to £1.
