I've been a sports nut all my life. I love football of all codes, but but since I joined the original 606, I've been really surprised by the almost tribal nature of the support for each club. Why is football so important in Europe? It's almost like a religion.

It's bigger than religion for some people.

The tales of good (Rangers) vs evil (Celtic)

It's huge. I can only dream about what it must be like to hear 100,000 people giving voice to song. Amazing stuff.

In Australia we can have the same number to a game, and the roar can be deffening, but there is nothing like the singing that you have over there.

And for that matter, why all the agro between Ireland, Wales, England and Scotland?

The English don't care about the Welsh, they're a bit of a joke.

We don't respect the irish, they're cowardly civilian-murdering scum and mostly ginger mutants.

We see the Scottish as our ******ed sibling, they're doing the best they can with their limited means.

Hope that clears it up for you <ok>

TBH the 'hatred' of footie fans towards each other, then the hypocricy when England play, has always been hard to understand

Most countries who dont have football as a national sport, that I have visited, have rivalries but its all handshakes and smiles and a good day out

football rivalries can end in death and destruction

You're more likely to get stabbed in quite a few continental countries than at an English football match imo.

I agree with that, I wasnt saying the death and destruction was limited to England. Its a football thing

With england it was the hypocricy of fans, probably the same in other countries too. However I have personally known of football hooligans of say everton and LFC who hated each other but were united at england matches

To be fair Cyc, I think a lot of it is down to segregation. I've been to AFL games in Aus and the crowds have been massive and every bit as into the game but as they're all mixed in together the tension's diluted. I would say the same about rugby union but they're either Welsh and by definition sub human or all middle class ****wits who think nothing of drinking each others piss and jumping into the bath together.
