In the aftermath of RVP's statement I was among those who thought we should get rid of him ASAP, even using the phrase 'ungrateful prick'. Now that I have had a chance to gain some perspective, I think there is much to be gained in forcing him to see out his contract. I'm not convinced we'll see a subdued, sulky player on the pitch. I believe it is in Robin's interest to play to the best of his ability this season(if we keep him) because he'll want to attract top level suiters next summer and I still believe he has an affection for the club and would want to give his all even if he was staying for a year longer than he would have hoped. Also, if his performances drop off, we have Poldi and Giroud to take up the slack. If he does match last year's quality then what a dangerous attacking line up we will possess! In his statement he only mentioned that he wasn't going to sign a new contract, not that he definitely wanted to leave this summer. The team we'll have next season if he stays, (assuming we bring in a DM) will have a great chance of silverware and may even persuade him to sign up anyway. As a fan, I want to see us win with a good team rather than get some money in the bank, we've seen too much of that in recent years. I therefore have changed my mind: I say keep him and launch an all out assault on the league and the cups and win something for once!!!!! Who's with me?

I basically agree in principle, however if a very large offer came in, and im talking about 30 million then I would probably take it. But in all honesty I don't believe any club will offer that sort of money, therefore I think we should keep him, even if it just warn other players that they will only leave the club when we want and can't just leave when they want. From reading between the line a few clubs have put in offer but less than 15 million, and I don't see any point in selling for that price as we don't really need the money, it would have to be a crazy offer for us to accept. Keeping RVP could be the difference between finishing second rather than third, and we would then get more prize money, so a small offer would not even make good financial sense.

The fact he doesnt want to sign a new contract and at the very least is leaving next year - is enough for me to not want him in our team. Fair enough. hes been great for us (last season) and wouldnt of got top 4 without him.. but time to go.. thanks for last season but if you want out, i dont want you here.

I do concede that RVP staying for a year after making that statement is a bitter pill to swallow but if Wenger could persuade him to give it another year and give his all (which I think he would do anyway) then I think it makes footballing sense to keep him. Us gooners could feel genuine excitement about challenging for once and could have a really good go at the league. I think that feeling supercedes any resentment over Van Persie's conduct this summer. The options we would have up front would be brilliant! We could see genuine quality on the bench instead of the depressing sight of Chamack and Park when we need to change a game. If he stays and starts banging in the goals again then sod what he does next summer!
