Up to 2,000 Mayo GAA supporters are expected to travel over to New York to support their county in the opening round of the Connacht SFC. Mayo take on New York on Sunday May 4th at Gaelic Park and they will certainly have plenty of support on their side as droves of supporters are set to head over next week. As it's a Bank Holiday here, many have taken advantage of that and the Mayo News reports that they will be staying in the Wellington Hotel in Manhattan, which has been a base for Mayo supporters over the years. Mayo have been to New York as recently as 2009 and before that in 2004. Many will be familiar with the area. The Connacht champions are overwhelming favourites to win the match and with so much support for them, it enhances their chances of progressing to the next round.
The Mayo players and supporters must love getting to play over there, it more or less a guaranteed win and its a weekend away in New York. I reckon it beats playing in MacHale Park anyway.
