I can categorically state that this is a South Yorkshire fertility ritual - they call it Dingling** **This is why we taunt them with ''you ****ing Dingles'' ........... you're welcome!
This harks back to an ancient Yorkshire ritual where a young man within a village would take a cooking pot and place it on the head of a young maiden whom he would like to marry. The maiden would either accept the proposal or smash the pot on the ground if she did not want to accept the offer of marriage. The ritual is believed to have been used in the Dark Ages when it was deemed improper to ask for a lady's hand but apparently the placing of a cooking pot on her head was acceptable. Strange but true.
