Marseille are desperate for cash and we have been in for this lad on a number of occasions so I hope there's some truth in this.

Newcastle have had a £10.7million offer for Marseille midfielder Florian Thauvin rejected, while West Ham finally reached an agreement for Dimitri Payet.
The ambitious offer was made with Newcastle willing to pay the amount in one sum.
The 22-year-old Thauvin has been on Newcastle's radar for some time and has also attracted interest from Tottenham and Arsenal. He is a pacy left winger with good technique who has been capped by France at Under 21 level.

Charlie Austin is their top transfer target this summer and are pushing hard for a deal to be completed

Newcastle are also continuing to pursue Schalke defender Joel Matip and hope to conclude a £7m deal although Schalke general manager Horst Heldt said: 'Joel intends to stay on.'
The bid for Thauvin has also had a knock-on effect for West Ham's bid for Dimitri Payet.

West Ham have finally agreed a £12m deal with Marseille for French winger Dimitri Payet
Marseille want West Ham to structure their bid in similar fashion to Newcastle's with one payment but a £12m agreement has now been reached.
Payet held talks over a new contract at Marseille at the weeknd but is still keen to come to London if the right deal can be agreed.
West Ham, meanwhile, are in no rush to sell winger Stewart Downing despite interest from 5under1and and rejected a £5m offer.

We seem to annoy foreign coaches and chairman quite a bit.

Anyone we want from Montpellier? Would be fun to see some more Nicollin abuse coming our way.

    "Ambitious bid made"

What is an ambitious bid? Sounds like info 'leaked' from the club to make it appear they're hard at work. SSDD.

The Newcastle version of an ambitious bid is one that is somewhere between 50% and 52% of the asking price.

Marseille WERE desperate for cash, then a team with ACTUAL ambition showed up (West Ham) and gave them some for a quality player (Payet). NUFC, meanwhile, offered £7m less than asking price for a youngster who has sell-on value. And some on here say "be patient" <laugh>

I don't seem to see the Marseille hierarchy badmouthing West Ham? I didn't read any comments from Sinisa Mihajlovic saying "pah, why would Obiang move to the Hammers", maybe I missed that one (as in, Wolfsburg boss laughing at our Dost move). Liverpool quickly signed Firmino for £29m, not that we could dream of competing with them mind. 15 clubs from the PL have scouts at the U-21 Euro's, we don't unsurprisingly.

Seems to me Graham Carr is now in the business of recommending either fairly obvious players that he SHOULD have been recommending years ago (Thauvin at Lille, Dost at Heerenveen, Austin at Burnley). We'll be making an "ambitious" bid for Raheem Sterling later on today. £7.8m. Alright we'll go as high as £7.5m but that's my final offer.

Have to laugh, club get criticised for not bidding for players and then get criticised when the do <doh>

You never bid what a club is "asking for" with your opening bid. Liverpool first bid 25m for Carroll and we rinsed them for 35m in the end. It's called a negotiation. It's not buying a tv from a shop where you pay the price on the sticker.

Everyone wants big name/proven players. It takes longer to deals for those type of players compared to signing a Riviere or a Perez. I mean look at De Gea, Real Madrid want him, he wants to go and he's still not left. No reports of Real even bidding have broken in the media. It's pathetic, give it time.

Would you bid £18M for Thauvin?

If not, why expect the Club to do so. I don't know how much Thauvin is worth but from the media news £18M seems way over the top for a player who doesn't seem to have set the French League alight last year.

I'm just struggling to understand how we first looked at Thauvin when he left Lille in 2013 and we haven't found anyone better in that entire time. I'm struggling to understand the point of bidding for him at all. Fair enough, criticising a low-ball offer is pushing the negative boat out a bit far, so I retract that statement. But I'm equally confused as to why we're chasing the same names time and again, even when they fail to prove themselves.

It just looks muddled, confused and all a bit aimless.

I wouldn't expect the club to bid 18m, but bidding 10m for a player that is clearly not going to go for anywhere near that low tells me we're going to do the typical crap of putting in bids that we know will be rejected, claim we tried, then sign some ligue 2 nobody for 45 quid.

I think they want 18 million Euro by the way lads.
That's about £12.8m so there's only another £1m to go if I'm reading things right.
The club is quite rightly saying 'look, we'll pay you all the money up from but we want a small discount on the asking price'.. it's no different from buying a sofa and saying 'discount for cash?' like in the good old days.
The fact that we've made what I think is a serious bid means we are at least trying.

By the way, don't forget the players in France pay a **** load more in tax so there's another benefit for them to move to England.

Now this part I agree with.

I can understand watching and following a players progress before deciding to bid/buy.

I can't understand why we do that and when he doesn't seem to have progressed (my impression from the media) at not one but two clubs, then why are we still after him? Especially when it is said that it iours is a much tougher league and he doesn't seem to be a physical type of player. I don't mean a la Tiote but even a la Hazard (I don't mean on the talent level just how Hazard is a tough player to knock off the ball)

Did someone not say he made the French duffers team of the year award? And turned us down 2-3 times?

I'm all for us bidding but lets at least fix the obvious. Lack of home based players, lack of centre backs. I have no problem us bringing in the likes of this lad as long as we don't head into a 5th season with the same 3 centre backs <laugh>

This is it here, we have literally just signed a fancy French winger for £12m and he didn't quite make it, yet was on the periphery of the French World Cup squad at the time. We're bidding, by the looks of it, for the same player, just a slightly worse version, who didn't want to join us from Lille and who wrote on Twitter YESTERDAY about his desire to stay at OM. I'm not saying I'm a super scout, but this seems pretty fcking basic to me that it's not worth the punt. How much would Nathan Redmond, Yannick Bolasie or Anthony Knockaert cost? Nowhere near as much, you could probably get two for the price of one Thauvin, and you know you'll get commitment.

Seriously, the patient few - how fcking difficult can this really be? We need approx. 6 FIRST TEAM players, net. We know what we need. It would seem from every fact available that Thauvin is not needed. We desperately need at least one CB as an absolute priority, probably a second and certainly a better left back than our two options. We certainly need a striker whose first touch isn't a tackle. We need creativity in midfield and someone who can break up play better. A real right winger/midfielder would also be welcome. It is not and cannot be rocket science, so what the fck are Carr/Charnley doing?

So for those interested, Florian Thauvin has posted to his official Twitter account that he'll be at Marseille next year wearing the No 10.

No, I don't think it was by chance. I think as his parents lived in France it was quite deliberate.
