Roker Reports: Sell-On Fee Could Be Holding Up Striker Move Guess it's time for your daily dose of Steven Fletcher news - the story that just won't go away and certainly nobody is bored of yet... Sarcasm aside, there is at least a minor development on any move for the Scottish striker, and that's that there have been reports that a sell-on fee due to Burnley in any transfer, estimated at 15% in some quarters, which could be why Wolves are driving the price for Fletcher so high. While the vast majority of Sunderland fans, us included, expect him to move to the Stadium Of Light this summer, the price does have some sections worried. Fees suggested have ranged from anywhere between £8m and £15m for his services, with some fans uncomfortable at the thought of going above the £10-12m range. Obviously it seems Wolves are looking for £10m+ for their prized forward, after any sell-on fee, therefore they're probably looking for a fee in excess of £11.5m, which is teetering on being a little steep. This however could all soon disappear. Burnley are very keen so sign up Sam Vokes from Wolves, whom they had on loan last season. Reports suggest that the striker is also keen on a move to Turf Moor, and negotiations for him hinge on Fletcher moving on. There seems to be two schools of thought on it. 1) The sell-on fee would be used by Burnley to sign Vokes, or 2) Vokes' transfer to Burnley would negate the sell-on fee. Both deals are probably of equal value, but it depends on how much Burnley want Vokes really. With a windfall of cash they could sign him from Wolves and get a little extra on top. Either way, it would appear the sell-on fee, if true at 15%, could be pivotal in negotiating a fee for Fletcher, whom Wolves have claimed they are in no rush to sell. Player's have the power these days though as we've experienced first hand with Asamoah Gyan, and if he wants to move he'll force it through some how. Business could probably be done at around the £10-£12m mark. We'll have to sit tight a while longer to find out if this really is the case though. This looks like it could run and run all summer*
I know what people are saying about how we need him but anything above 10m is pretty stretched to say the least. He aint worth 10m and I don't think we should pay it.
Not sure if there is an easy way to break this to you but, the truth is, the simple fact of life is. What you, me or anyone else thinks a player is worth or what we should pay is irrelevant, Short, Byrne O'Neill are the only names that matter, if they think yes then that's fine by me, whatever the price.
This is where I disagree with you Syd. I do care about the price because I look at clubs like Leeds and Portsmouth, paying way over the odds for average/decent players and don't want our club to go like them.
Its interesting to note that whilst I too would rather we pay closer to the £7m/£8m than say £15m, just what can you buy for your money these days? Fletcher has a 1 in 3 strike record in the EPL over 3 years and with 2 teams that probably create 2 or 3 chances every game for him. That makes it even more impressive. What else can we buy with that record? Foreign players take time to settle generally and will cost the same £10m+ as well. The like of some of the names I've seen mentioned will cost in excess of that imo and demand huge wages. Fletcher will be able to settle far quicker and create an immediate impact and our wage structure will be similar, if not slightly better than Wolves, so it wont cost us a fortune to give him a good deal. Fletcher is a good fit for us too. Hard worker and good targetman, I would have had him from his Burnley days to be honest. If he rattles in 15 goals then no one will give a ****e about a £10m price tag and his value will increase.
When you think Mandy was 35m and Bent 24m then maybe he is worth 10m you just don't know till he comes, but then who else is there?? I would have like to have seen us go for Holt who had a better goal return last season and would have been a better partner for Campbell. I just don't see Fetcher leading our line, MON seems to prefer a big man. Then again he cannot be any worse than Bendtner. Its a real shame that we have history with Bent and Mandy is a mag because either of them would be perfect for us with our wingers. Our 3 of McClean, Sess and Larsson are arguably our biggest strength we need someone who can spear head that attack.
Trouble is with Fletcher for me, and yes I know its statistics but. He scored 12 goals last year, which netted wolves 10 points 2 wins and 4 draws and only scored more than 1 once, where he scored 2 against us. and he has been in 2 sides that got relegated in consecutive seasons. I dont care if we pay 5 million for him, or 15, I just dont think he is good enough.
I'm sorry guys but if none of you can see the horrendous situation with the derby games and Carroll then you're blind. Its another embarrassing disaster just waiting to happen. I have mellowed in 18 months over Bent and would be happy to see him return but a b&w loving backstabber playing for us again - never imo.
That's my point it aint never going to happen in a month of Sundays, it would be a disaster because if him being a mag. If he was from Yorkshire and had never played for the mags and his family were all Leeds supporters we would certainly be after him.
We would never know if he would or would not, so its a mute point. I just dont rate Fletcher at all, if we do get him i hope i have egg on my face, and he does score loads and gets us loads of points like bent did (different type of player i know, still dont rate him though). For a big lad you would think he would have more assists, but 2 all last season is pretty pitiful, I know for assists it takes 2 to tango, but it just doesnt seem like for all his potential and size, he didnt do sod all.
