SUNDERLAND striker Steven Fletcher sustained an injury in tonight’s Scotland win over the Republic of Ireland which is likely to keep him out of Tuesday’s friendly against England. “We wouldn’t be able to risk him,” said Scotland boss Gordon Strachan. “We wouldn’t want to risk it for Sunderland. We’ll knock it on the head if he’s walking out of here with protective boots on. There’s no way we’re going to try and play him against England.” Fletcher’s link-up play was impressive and he did well in his aerial battle with Sunderland team-mate John O’Shea but missed an early header and failed to connect with a Shaun Maloney cross. He limped off in the 55th minute after earlier being felled by a poor challenge by Aiden McGeady. http://www.sunderlandecho.com/sport...ruled-out-of-scotland-england-clash-1-6954686
A nasty tackle from a fired up t**t who commited a few, and should have seen red, during a very combatative game, in which somebody was going to suffer, and it looks like it could well be us. Fingers crossed.
He was having a good game, I reckon he'll be alright. ****ing hope so cos relying on Wickham & Jozy is terrifying.
Scotland international Steven Fletcher is awaiting scan results on an injury to his right ankle, which is certain to rule him out of his nation's upcoming clash with England in Glasgow. Fletcher suffered a knock during a heavy tackle from Everton winger Aiden McGeady and limped off the field of play when replaced by Chris Martin on 56 minutes. The Sunderland star was later seen sporting a protective boot - as a precautionary measure - when talking with captain Scott Brown in the aftermath of a famous 1-0 victory over the Irish. He subsequently underwent a scan on the injury during the course of Saturday, while being ruled out of Tuesday evening's clash with the Auld Enemy by Scotland boss Gordon Strachan. Both Gus Poyet and Fletcher remain hopeful of his participation in Saturday's away game at Leicester City, but the player admits he doesn't know the seriousness of the issue at this stage: “I have no chance of making the England game. “I just hope I can be back for the Sunderland game at the weekend, but even then I need to wait and see what the extent of the injury is.” It's the second time the ex-Wolves man has been ruled out of a tasty fixture with England, having also missed out on the 3-2 Wembley defeat against the same opposition last August. All concerned will be hoping for good news when the medical report comes back in order to allay any lingering fears of another lengthy spell on the sidelines for the in-form forward.
