    Black Cats pounce for Fletcher

Sunderland have reportedly made the first move to try and lure Wolves striker Steven Fletcher to the Stadium of Light.

Black Cats boss Martin O'Neill is determined to add some firepower to his squad before the new Premier League campaign gets underway in August with a lack of goals last term being a big problem, while loan man Nicklas Bendtner is also set to depart.

The Journal claims reports that Fletcher had ruled out a move to Wearside last week were well wide of the mark and the player would be interested in moving back closer to his Scottish roots.

It also revealed that Black Cats' officials opened discussions with their Wolves counterparts about a potential deal for Fletcher following last month's goalless draw at the Stadium of Light.

Wolves are adamant that they will not let any of their star men leave on the cheap following relegation to the Championship, but it seems Sunderland are confident they can reach a compromise that would give Fletcher an immediate return to the Premier League.

Journo on the ball there then......

I've also heard rumours of a 10 mill bid, which seems steep......but just how much does a decent striker cost in todays market?

10m for fletcher does seem steep but it's what we need.

I think if we paid 10m for fletcher & maybe 7-10m for another forward (would love to see Defoe sign)
And sold Gyan for 10-12m that would be canny.

I'm always a little surprised when I hear concerns over cost, I don't give a sod, if Short says yes that does for me, not my dosh.

That said I can see him coming for around 7 mil

Probably a basic cash fee ... say £5m then add ons depending on appearances .... and maybe goals..

Wolves will need cash sooner rather than later to rebuild for a quick return . ..

Fletcher’s Edinburgh-based agent is understood to have been on Wearside last week as Sunderland continue their pursuit of the £10million-rated forward, who is keen on a move to the Stadium of Light.

That is the clearest indication yet that the Black Cats are making progress as they look for a remedy to the lack of cutting edge that was their biggest Achilles heel last term.

Tentative enquiries have been made about the forward, and Martin O’Neill’s team are understood to have sought references on the striker over the last couple of months.

Senior officials at Wolves were asked about Fletcher when the two teams met in April – another indication that Sunderland are ready to table a formal offer.

With the opportunity to move closer to his native Scotland, the player would certainly entertain the interest. Fletcher’s camp were mystified by reports last week that claimed he had ruled out Wearside as a destination, and although Wolves would not sell on the cheap, they are confident a deal can be done.

The Molineux club have made it clear that they will not allow their players to be prised away on the cheap – and have slapped an eight-figure asking price on the head of Fletcher and Matt Jarvis, who has also been discussed by the Sunderland hierarchy.
