Five year contracts- good negotiating or just greedy

Just seen that Obertan has agreed a 5 year deal at Newcastle.
What is it with these deals players never stay that long and then declare they are happy.
Hmm remind you of anyone?

 

It's win-win all around, the player is guaranteed a silly amount of money for 5 years and the club can get a good fee if another club wants to sign him.

 

Any idea of the fee?

He's looked dire whenever I've seen him, but he may just need regular football.

 

I was fairly impressed with him in his first few games at Utd but he's looked pretty awful since. I'll be interested to see how he gets on at Newcastle.

 

Yes they are guaranteed good money for 5ys, whether they're in the team...or tossing it off on the bench and/or in the stands, like messrs. Bentley, Keane and co.

I'd like to see full wages paid only if you play, and say only get 50% if you can't bother your arse to get into the team.

Haven't some players signed longer contracts than 5 years before?

 

Luka Modric signed a 6 year contract last summer though?

 

And I think Messi signed a long contract at Barcelona a few years ago.
