Charlie Austin deserves a chance to enhance his top flight reputation (Picture: Reuters)
After a miserable season most QPR fans would be forgiven for wanting to forget about football this summer but those at the club have plenty of work to do following relegation from the top flight.
We’ve made a start by releasing players on big wages but if we are going to hit the ground running in the Championship, here’s a few pointers of what needs to happen.
    1) Sort out the futures of Charlie Austin and Matt Phillips
Relegation has given us the chance to get rid of players we are glad to see the back of, bye Shaun Wright-Phillips, but it also means we are likely to say goodbye to players you don’t want to see go, like Charlie Austin.
He defied expectations to finish fourth top goal scorer in his first Premier League season at a struggling side and deserves a chance to stay in that league, but we must not short change ourselves in the fee we get. Players with that goal return don’t come cheap and if players like Mario Balotelli can fetch £18million then anything less than £20million is a crime.
Matt Phillips had a great end to the season thanks to some proper coaching and has attracted plenty of interest but he’s exactly who should be spearheading any attempt to get promoted.
    2) Splash the cash for goals and get Jordan Rhodes
Replacing Austin’s goals is no mean feat but there are plenty of strikers in the Championship who with the right support can fire us back up, the main one being Jordon Rhodes. He’ll come at a cost and despite the club needing to be more prudent in expenditure, up front is an area where the purse strings have to be loosened.

    3) Give the number one jersey to Alex McCarthy
McCarthy was once tipped as a challenger for Joe Hart’s England jersey but his career has stalled, in part to Rob Green’s form last season but now is the time for the ex-Reading man to be made first choice. Green was great for us but at 35 years old with suitors in the top flight it’s time we looked to the long term and instilled McCarthy as first choice.
    4) Clear out the overpaid
The ending of various expensive contracts eased the wage bill but we still have the likes of Armand Traore, Sandro and Junior Hoilett all on hefty salaries they never justified. They need to be moved on – that’s if someone will take them!
    5) Get our transfer business done by pre-season
Pre-season is a month away and Chris Ramsey spoke of eight more players wanted by then after the signings of Ben Gladwin and Massimo Luongo. No doubt there’s work going on behind the scenes but it’s important he has in place a near finished squad as pre-season gets underway. One of the many reasons of our downfall last season was the late transfer activity and it can’t happen again if we have any aspirations of an instant top flight return.

I must admit I was forgetting about the likes of Armand Traore, Sandro and Junior Hoilett.
In truth, all three have completely failed to show their worth in the PL ................. if only we could a way to punt them.

A complete fresh approach to team players is needed so the less hangovers we have from the past season, the better.
In saying that, I would have kept Henry for a start.

We won´t get 20 million for Charlie unfortunately unless there is a bidding war between Newcastle and Liverpool. Southampton, WHU and Stoke won´t pay that much. Like I said in another post Sandro will be like the new Andrew Johnson and keep our medical staff on their toes. The other two can leave, they don´t care which is a pity because if they actually applied themselves they can play football.
